“The golf course can be a very intimidating place.” This is what Corbin High School boys golf coach Joe Roberts had to say recently when asked what it feels like to be a young golfer just starting out in the sport.
Luckily for the youngest members of the Redhounds golf team, they have a group of seasoned veterans who are ready and willing to go the extra mile to show their less-experienced counterparts how it’s done.
Roberts’ “beginners” team, made up mostly of middle school-aged students who are taking their first steps into competitive golf, have been involved in an intrasquad competition in order to gain some experience on the course....
As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, three Corbin High School students are receiving some much-deserved recognition after putting together an award-winning public service announcement about mental health as part of global HOSA - Future Health Professionals organization.
“HOSA began as ‘Health Occupation Students of America,’” explained Julia Rollins, health science teacher at the Corbin Area Technology Center. “About eight years ago it went international as a student-led organization, not a club.”
This year, three of Rollins’ students - Riley Lewis, Lindsay Jones and Hannah Perry - came together to create a 30-second PSA on the important topic of mental health. The project has been well-received, and was selected as...
After last week’s ruling from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association that they would move forward with their plan to begin fall athletics in early September, there was much speculation about whether Gov. Andy Beshear would override the decision during his Monday press briefing.
As it turns out, Beshear decided to not reverse the KHSAA’s decision, but he also made it clear that he does not think it is wise for schools to allow athletic competitions to resume at this point in time, explaining that we are currently in a perilous situation where the number of new cases of COVID-19 could begin to spike again if we make the mistake...
At its Board of Control meeting Thursday morning, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association discussed the possibility of adopting further changes to the 2020 fall sports season. In the end, however, the board voted to keep the current plan in place that would have athletes being able to officially begin practices on Monday, August 24.
Details of the plan to resume athletic activities this fall include the following:
The sports of soccer and volleyball will be allowed to conduct intrasquad scrimmages beginning with the first day of practice on Aug. 24. Football will be “restricted to phase-in of activity per Bylaw 23 and revised guidance.”
Interscholastic scrimmaging will not be...
In a nearly three-hour online board of control meeting Tuesday, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association has outlined how school sports should proceed as we enter into the fall season.
KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett spoke early on during Tuesday’s meeting saying that he and other association officials have been closely monitoring all data concerning COVID-19 in the state. He said that it is important to be careful while moving forward with any attempts to resume school sports, also acknowledging that the association needs to be continue to be ready to make adjustments to any and all plans “at a moment’s notice” if necessary.
Before beginning discussion on how the fall season...

Friday morning, Corbin High School senior golfer John-Austin Childress signed on to compete at the next level as a member of the Midway University men’s golf team.
“It’s a bag of emotions,” said Childress’ coach and father, Brian Childress. “John-Austin has worked hard to get where he’s at, and I’m just really proud of him. This has been one of his goals ever since he started playing golf. To see one of your players, especially your child, accomplish that goal is a big thing.”
When asked about getting the opportunity to play at Midway, Childress said, “I’m just really grateful. I’ve wanted to play college golf ever since I was a...
Williamsburg sophomore Morgan Owens-Lewis has qualified to compete in this year’s KHSAA golf state championship tournament, taking place next Tuesday and Wednesday at the Bowling Green Country Club.
Owens-Lewis shot a 79 at the region championship meet, held this past Monday at the Burnside Island State Park golf course. That was good enough to qualify her for state, making her the only coverage area golfer that will be making the trip next week.
This is Owens-Lewis’ first time competing on the state championship stage, although she did appear in the All “A” state championship tournament earlier this month at the Woodson Bend golf course in Somerset.
Owens-Lewis’ coach and grandfather, Mike Owens,...
