I have seen girls out on the high school football field.
I don’t remember the exact team, but the center was a girl. It wasn’t a local team, but she hung right in there with the boys.
The majority of times that I have seen girls on the football field has been as the place kicker. Extra points can be one of the most adventurous plays in high school football so I don’t blame coaches for finding the best kicker they can no matter their biology.
Too many games have been decided on a made or missed extra point.
With the addition of Corbin’s wrestling team, I have seen the girls mix it...
“To say this year has been a journey would be an understatement,” wrote Corbin High School Cheerleading Coach Shonya O’Neill on her Facebook page. “This little team has had many ups and downs and heartbreak after heartbreak.”
O’Neill’s team was crowned the Sweet 16 In-game State Champions at Rupp Arena last week.
“Over the last three weeks I have watched them become better with each day and each game,” O’Neill wrote. “When you are on a team you have to trust your coach and coaches trust the relationship they have with their children. They have given their total trust in me and fol-lowed the process all the way out.”
The team’s win...
Sports like cross country, golf, wrestling, tennis and track and field are unique in that while athletes are competing as part of a team, they have the opportunity to win individual titles as well.
At the Region 7 wrestling tournament Saturday at McCreary Central, Corbin’s Seth Huff reached the championship match in the 215-pound weight class.
Whitley County’s Anthony Colmus finished third in the 138-pound weight class. As a result, both will be among those competing at the semi-state tournament next weekend in Lexington.
It is interesting to watch events like this and see the team dynamic.
Granted, Saturday dragged on with a lot of downtime between matches. I got there to take...

Huff goes into Saturday at Great Crossing High School as the 15 seed and will face Walton Verona’s Zach Watson in the first round.
Colmus finishing third in the 138-pound weight class.

Corbin High School’s Wrestling Redhounds made history last week, hosting the first home match in the program’s short history against Whitley County.
The Redhounds and Colonels took to the mat at the Corbin Middle School gym.
“I really thought there would be some people there, but I didn’t expect that it would be that big,” said Corbin Coach Chuck Davis noting that the stands were full of spectators.
Davis said the team has found a place that it can turn into a home.
“The middle school is perfect for this,” Davis said noting its smaller size and layout with bleachers on one size brought the crowd closer to the action.

Whitley County Basketball had a rough season in 2020-21, going 4-16 that included and 11-game losing streak and a first-round loss in the 50th District Tournament.
Hopes were high as the Colonels opened the 2021-22 season 2-0, but Colonel Nation was left wondering after Coach Mark White was suddenly ousted without explanation from the school or district administration.
In a press release sent out announcing the decision, Athletic Director Bryan Stewart said that White was no longer with the program, but provided no...
Corbin High School sports fan will have a new pack of Redhounds to root for as Coach Chuck Davis has held his first practices for the wrestling team.
Davis said Monday that more than 40 students in grades eight through 12 have turned out for the practices that began Thursday.
“We hope to fill at 14 weights and if we get enough girls, fill the 12 weights to field a full team there,” Davis said noting that seven girls have currently come out for the team.
Davis said while the wrestlers have begun learning the basics, they are still awaiting the arrival of mats and uniforms and to finalize the required paperwork...
