The University of the Cumberlands (UC) takes pride in its athletes and their abilities. One athlete, Wendall Williams (Syracuse, NY), has done many things both on the football field and on the track for the Patriots in the last two years. After winning the NAIA National Championship in the long jump his junior year, he would break school and NAIA records during his senior season of football for kick return yards in a single game. Now, he’s setting new records on a much larger level.
Williams would earn an invite to the Minnesota NFL Regional Combine on Saturday, March 5th at Winter Park, the home of the Minnesota Vikings’ practice...
The University of the Cumberlands Patriots men’s basketball team traveled to Frankfort Sunday afternoon to take on Georgetown College in the finals of this year’s Mid-South Conference tournament.
Both squads had one win over the other coming into Sunday’s MSC title game, so there was no clear cut favorite to win this rubber match, especially with it being contested on a neutral floor.
In the end, Georgetown was able to secure a 79-69 win to become Mid-South Conference champions in 2016. Both teams will advance on to the NAIA national championship tournament later this month, however. The conference champion Tigers will be coming in with an overall record of 28-4. The...
The Corbin Redhounds ended their season with a 19-11 record after losing 62-48 to the Harlan County Black Bears Thursday night in the first round of this year’s 13th Region tournament at the Arena.
It was a sloppy game, and neither team was really ever able to get into a consistent rhythm on offense. There were several missed baskets on both ends of the floor, and plenty of fouling. At the end of one quarter the score was tied at just 8-8. When the first half came to close, Harlan County held on to a narrow 19-15 lead.
Things remained close in the third, with the Redhounds outscoring the Bears 16-14...
The Corbin Lady Redhounds made history last week when they defeated South Laurel to win their fourth consecutive 50th District championship. They would not make it past the first round of this year’s 13h Region tournament, however, falling 73-52 to the North Laurel Lady Jaguars Monday evening at the Arena.
Lady Hounds Head Coach Jason McDaniel found out that his team would have to face North Laurel at Saturday’s region tournament meeting and bracket draw. After the draw, he said, “North has a nice team. They have been one of the top teams in the region all year. When we played them just a couple of weeks ago we were...
The Corbin Redhounds (19-10) are hoping to rebound with a victory in the first round of this year’s 13th Region tournament after falling 77-58 to the South Laurel Cardinals in last Friday’s 50th District championship game at Whitley County High School.
South looked dominant from the start in Friday’s district championship, draining five three-point shots (four from freshman JJ Ramey) to take a 15-8 lead after one quarter of play.
Senior Cardinal Caleb Taylor found himself in foul trouble early on, and ended up on the bench for most of the first half. Corbin hoped to capitalize on the big man’s absence, but even without him South Laurel features a lot...
On Monday, Whitley County Lady Colonel soccer player Allison Jones signed her letter of intent to play for the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders beginning next season.
When asked about the opportunity, Jones said, “Since the beginning of the school year Lindsey Wilson has been my top choice. I want to play on their soccer team, and I really like the school as well. I love the campus.”
When asked to reflect back on her time at Whitley, Jones said, “I will definitely miss the team, and all of the special times that we’ve had together. I have really grown and learned a lot while playing soccer here.”
LWC women’s soccer assistant...
Corbin baseball Head Coach Cody Philpot is tasked with replacing a talented group of seniors in his second year at the helm. At the end of last season Philpot and his staff said goodbye to Nick Vorbeck, who was a fantastic power hitter and outfielder. They also said goodbye to Austin O’Neill, who was a great asset to the Hounds behind the plate at his catcher position. Andrew Jones was another outgoing senior. He unfortunately spent most of the year sidelined with an injury, but he provided a lot of great leadership, whether it was on the field or in the dugout. Finally, Trevor Browning came out to play...
The Mid-South Conference and The Sun Conference are merging to form the largest football conference in college sports.
Conference officials announced Thursday that beginning with the 2017 season, the Mid-South Conference will include 20 teams which will compete in three divisions. The new, expanded football conference will allow three teams to earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Football Championship Series.
"University of the Cumberlands is excited about the football expansion of the Mid-South Conference that will take effect in the fall of 2017,” said Randy Vernon, vice president for athletics at University of the Cumberlands.
“The addition of seven institutions will increase the number of football schools in the MSC from...
The Corbin Lady Redhounds (16-12) will be entering into this year’s 13th Region tournament as 50th District champions after defeating the South Laurel Lady Cardinals Thursday night, Feb 25, by a final score of 64-52.
This is the fourth district title in as many years for the Lady Hounds, making them the first team in the program’s history to achieve such a feat.
Head Coach Jason McDaniel said of Thursday’s history-making victory, “The girls stuck with the game plan tonight. I praise them for their focus and intensity. This means a lot, especially to our seniors. I could see the excitement on their faces after the game. We are going to...
The third time was not the charm for the Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets Monday night as they fell to the Corbin Lady Redhounds 65-37 in the first round of this year’s 50th District tournament, being played at Whitley County High School.
Corbin has had no trouble getting past Williamsburg this season, and Monday was no exception. With the win, the Lady Hounds improved to 15-12 on the year and advanced to Thursday night’s district championship game. They have also earned the right to play in this year’s 13th Region tournament, which will take place next week at the Corbin Arena.
Of the win, Lady Hounds Head Coach Jason McDaniel said, “We’ve...
