The University of the Cumberlands UC Men’s Lacrosse team opened up their inaugural season on the road in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Friday, February 19, at Montreat College in Montreat, NC. With the Patriots anxiously awaiting to hit the field for the first time in program history, emotions would run high throughout the game as UC would band together for a very convincing first win in program history, defeating Montreat by a final score of 22-8. On Thursday morning inside the gymnasium at Corbin High School, senior Redhound Harley Lambert officially signed on to play football for the University of the Cumberlands. Lambert, who has earned several honors and awards for his outstanding play on the defensive line, was one of the senior leaders that helped the 2015 football Hounds win district and regional championships. He also recently competed in the annual Kentucky-Tennessee Border Bowl All-Star Game at UC. The Williamsburg High School baseball and softball teams saw their seasons come to an end in the first round of the district tournament last year, but there was still plenty to be happy about and build upon. Both teams advanced to the second round of the regional All “A” tourney, with the baseball Jackets picking up a 3-2 victory over Barbourville, and the Lady Jackets winning 8-5 over Lynn Camp. Both teams also picked up big wins over district opponent Whitley County in the regular season, defeating the Colonels 4-3 on the baseball diamond, 3-2 on the softball field. The CHS cheer squad won their first-ever national title over the weekend at the Universal Cheerleaders Associations’ national championship competition in Orlando, Florida. It has been several years since the Lynn Camp Wildcats have been able to enjoy very much success on the baseball diamond. Head Coach Marc Estep had high hopes coming into last spring, but his team never could figure out how to put the pieces together and win ball games. In the end, they finished the season with just three wins, and 25 losses. In 2016, Estep is once again feeling good about the Wildcats’ prospects. The Corbin swim team is enjoying continued success in its third year of existence, with several swimmers on track to appear at the KHSAA state championship meet in Louisville later this month. New Head Coach Kim Moore recently spoke about how things have been going for the team this winter, as well as her expectations for the remainder of the season. “We’ve got a lot of new swimmers again this year, and our returning swimmers are all strong,” said Moore. “We also have a diver, Haley Martin, which is something that we didn’t have last year. Corbin High School students, faculty, staff, and supporters of the Redhound athletics program all packed themselves into Gilliam Gymnasium Tuesday morning to honor legendary football player Rodger Bird, who reached the pinnacle of the sport in 1968 when he appeared in Super Bowl II as a member of the Oakland Raiders. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl in 2016, the National Football League is presenting high schools across the nation with golden footballs for producing players that later went on to compete in the championship game.
