UC lacrosse teams begin inaugural seasons with wins

The University of the Cumberlands UC Men’s Lacrosse team opened up their inaugural season on the road in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Friday, February 19, at Montreat College in Montreat, NC. With the Patriots anxiously awaiting to hit the field for the first time in program history, emotions would run high throughout the game as UC would band together for a very convincing first win in program history, defeating Montreat by a final score of 22-8. Corbin’s Harley Lambert signs with University of the Cumberlands

On Thursday morning inside the gymnasium at Corbin High School, senior Redhound Harley Lambert officially signed on to play football for the University of the Cumberlands. Lambert, who has earned several honors and awards for his outstanding play on the defensive line, was one of the senior leaders that helped the 2015 football Hounds win district and regional championships. He also recently competed in the annual Kentucky-Tennessee Border Bowl All-Star Game at UC. Baseball, softball Yellow Jackets hoping to build off of successes from one year ago

The Williamsburg High School baseball and softball teams saw their seasons come to an end in the first round of the district tournament last year, but there was still plenty to be happy about and build upon. Both teams advanced to the second round of the regional All “A” tourney, with the baseball Jackets picking up a 3-2 victory over Barbourville, and the Lady Jackets winning 8-5 over Lynn Camp. If you looked inside the News Journal’s February 10 sports section you probably noticed the full-color page congratulating the Corbin High School cheerleading team on recently becoming national champions. The CHS cheer squad won their first-ever national title over the weekend at the Universal Cheerleaders Associations’ national championship competition in Orlando, Florida. Lynn Camp baseball and softball teams hoping to make 2016 a year for positive growth, development

It has been several years since the Lynn Camp Wildcats have been able to enjoy very much success on the baseball diamond. Head Coach Marc Estep had high hopes coming into last spring, but his team never could figure out how to put the pieces together and win ball games. In the end, they finished the season with just three wins, and 25 losses. In 2016, Estep is once again feeling good about the Wildcats’ prospects. Corbin swimmers showing great potential in year three; Region meet set to take place next week

The Corbin swim team is enjoying continued success in its third year of existence, with several swimmers on track to appear at the KHSAA state championship meet in Louisville later this month. Gold Standard: Former Redhound, UK Wildcat and Oakland Raider Rodger Bird honored Tuesday at CHS

Corbin High School students, faculty, staff, and supporters of the Redhound athletics program all packed themselves into Gilliam Gymnasium Tuesday morning to honor legendary football player Rodger Bird, who reached the pinnacle of the sport in 1968 when he appeared in Super Bowl II as a member of the Oakland Raiders.
