The Corbin Lady Hounds soccer team made history in 2015. They won 50th District and 13th Region titles, advancing all the way to the quarterfinal round of the KHSAA state championship playoffs before being defeated by eventual state runner-up Lexington Catholic. Two young players, sophomores Nikki Wells and Abby Baker, have played integral roles in the team’s recent success.  Both girls earned special recognition for their play at the district, region and state levels, and now they are both being presented with the opportunity to represent their country as members of U16 national teams. On Monday, Whitley County Lady Colonel soccer player Allison Jones signed her letter of intent to play for the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders beginning next season. When asked about the opportunity, Jones said, “Since the beginning of the school year Lindsey Wilson has been my top choice. I want to play on their soccer team, and I really like the school as well. I love the campus.” When asked to reflect back on her time at Whitley, Jones said, “I will definitely miss the team, and all of the special times that we’ve had together. The Corbin High School soccer program is celebrating its 23-year anniversary in 2015. The soccer Hounds played a JV-only scheduled in their inaugural season during the fall of 1992, and they were co-ed until splitting into separate boys and girls teams in the mid-nineties. Several district and region titles later, Head Coach Armando Cima recalls what it was like when things were just getting started over two decades ago. The story begins with the 1992-93 school year. Earlier this spring an announcement appeared inside a print edition of The News Journal about Challenger Sports’ British Soccer Camp, which returned to Whitley County for the second year just this past week. The camp included instruction for children as young as 2-3 years of age, and progressed all the way up to high school aged players.
