Info for this week’s state tennis, track championships

As reported in last week’s edition of the News Journal, a total of 18 high school tennis players from the coverage area are slated to compete in this year’s KHSAA state championships in Lexington. The tournaments will kick off tomorrow (Thursday) with Corbin’s Katherine Niemeier taking on Carrie Beckman of Sacred Heart at 8:00 a.m. at the University of Kentucky’s Boone/Downing Tennis Complex. Whitley County’s Anna Grace Zehr will take on Charity Nickel from Somerset, also at 8:00 a.m. at Boone/Downing. Tues Night Highlights: District baseball and softball coverage for April 17, 2018

Regular season district play opened up Tuesday for area high school baseball teams, with the Whitley County Colonels hosting the Corbin Redhounds and the South Laurel Cardinals hosting the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets. The Redhounds went to Whitley County Tuesday looking to keep a three-game win streak alive. On the other hand, the host Colonels were hoping to hang on to their region-best win-loss record. Whitley baseball and softball look strong in Monday wins

Both the Whitley County baseball and softball teams are looking strong as we approach the midway point in the month of April. The baseball Colonels recently went 4-0 during a Spring Break trip to play in the 2018 Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC. In their first game back Monday, they continued their winning ways with a dominating 24-0 shutout victory over visiting Harlan that improved them to 9-2 on the year. With a thrilling 1-0 victory over visiting Middlesboro Thursday evening, the Williamsburg Lady Jackets softball team became 13th Region All "A" champions in 2018. It took an extra inning of work for the Lady Jackets to get the job done Thursday, with both teams threatening at various points throughout the game, but neither being able to bring in a run by the end of regulation. LCHS softball looking forward to productive 2018 season

Lynn Camp Softball Coach Nikki Hendrix says her Lady Wildcats are a young team with only one senior and two juniors on the roster, but likes that they aren’t new to the program or high school softball. “We lost six starters, but our youth has some experience in the district and region,” Hendrix said noting the team finished runner-up in the 51st District before losing to Clay County in the 13th Region Tournament. Both the Corbin Redhounds baseball team and the Corbin Lady Hounds softball team are coming into the 2018 season as defending champions in the 50th District, where the competition is almost always fierce.
