Williamsburg softball, football athletes sign with University of the Cumberlands

On Thursday, Williamsburg Lady Jacket softball player Hailey Richardson signed on to continue her playing career at the University of the Cumberlands. Richardson will be part of a talented group of seniors that are hoping to lead the Lady Jackets back to the 13th Region tournament this season. The team missed the tourney last year after advancing to the semifinal round in 2016. As for her future in college, she will be joining a Lady Patriots team that finished the 2017 season with a 19-34 overall record. They are currently just four games into the 2018 season. Richardson will be joined at UC by current WHS classmate Hunner Adkins, who signed...

Prewitt sisters, Lesleigh and Caitlyn, talk their expectations for Lady Jackets softball in 2018

With head coach Jason Prewitt coming into his fourth year leading the program, the Williamsburg Lady Jackets softball team is looking to continue improving in 2018. In Coach Prewitt’s first season at the helm (2015), the Lady Jackets won ten games. That was a big improvement from their two-win season a year before, but still, there was much work to be done. In 2016, Prewitt and the Lady Jackets improved their overall win record to 16 games, including a 7-0 first round victory over Corbin in that year’s 50th District tournament, and an 11-2 win over Lynn Camp in the 13th Region tourney. 2017 was another successful campaign overall, once again recording 16...

Remaining coverage area baseball, softball teams see seasons come to an end in first round of region tourneys

There are no coverage area high school baseball or softball teams left standing after Monday’s first round games in the 2017 13th Region tournaments. In the softball tournament, held at South Laurel High School, the Corbin Lady Hounds kicked things off Monday with a game at noon against the North Laurel Lady Jaguars. After a three-run top of the second inning, a solo home run from Emily Sizemore in the top of the fourth and a one-run top of the fifth, the Jags looked as if they might be able to end Corbin’s 2017 season with a shutout loss. The Hounds prevented that, however, with sophomore Harleigh Grubb smacking an...
