Dates and times announced for upcoming regional, state competitions

Next week coverage area athletes will compete for regional baseball and softball championships, as well as state track and tennis titles. The 2019 13th Region baseball tournament will kickoff Monday, May 27 at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN. The Corbin Redhounds will face Bell County in game one at 11:00 am. Knox Central vs. Clay County will come next, followed by Middlesboro vs. Barbourville and North Laurel vs. Whitley County in the night game. Semifinal round games will be at 5:30 and 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 28, and the championship game will be played Wednesday, May 29 at 7:00 pm. It was a busy night in our coverage area Tuesday, with a district baseball champion crowned, several regional tennis championships decided and track & field teams hitting the road to compete for a chance to appear at state. Starting with baseball, this year's 50th District championship game between Corbin and Whitley County was another classic in a series that has become well known for producing plenty of memorable moments. CHAMPION RUNNERS: Mattingly and Simons win regional titles, many others qualify for state XC meets

All of the News Journal’s coverage area cross country teams were in action over the weekend at Cave Lake Park in Wayne County. It was the site of the 2018 regional championships, and after a long list of impressive performances many local runners now have their sights set on competing in this weekend’s KHSAA state championships. Williamsburg won the Class A Region 6 boys race at Cave Lake, meaning the entire team is headed to state. As reported in last week’s edition of the News Journal, a total of 18 high school tennis players from the coverage area are slated to compete in this year’s KHSAA state championships in Lexington. The tournaments will kick off tomorrow (Thursday) with Corbin’s Katherine Niemeier taking on Carrie Beckman of Sacred Heart at 8:00 a.m. at the University of Kentucky’s Boone/Downing Tennis Complex. Whitley County’s Anna Grace Zehr will take on Charity Nickel from Somerset, also at 8:00 a.m. at Boone/Downing. Area track and field teams were in action again late last week, with Corbin, Williamsburg and Lynn Camp traveling to Harlan County to compete in this year’s SEKC championships on Friday, and the Whitley County Colonels appearing in the Heart of the Bluegrass meet in Harrodsburg on Saturday. The Williamsburg girls brought home first place from the SEKC meet, with junior Selena Mattingly securing four individual first place finishes, and teammates Danasia Buchanon and Lillie Hall finishing with two first place awards apiece. The Corbin Redhounds’ run to the Class 3A state football championship: Undoubtedly, the biggest sports story of the year was Corbin football’s 13-2 season that included the program’s first appearance in a state championship game since 2002. BACK ON TOP: Williamsburg’s Selena Mattingly becomes two-time Class A cross country state champion

The Mattingly dynasty continues at Williamsburg. After placing third at the KHSAA Class A state championship cross country meet as a middle schooler, Lady Jacket runner Selena Mattingly captured her first state title as a freshman in 2015. She returned to the state meet as a sophomore last fall, this time coming away with a still-respectable fifth place finish. Coming into this year’s state meet, Mattingly and her coaches were hopeful for at least a third place performance. Williamsburg’s Mattingly wins region cross country title, area runners advancing to state

This past Saturday, area cross country teams traveled to Monticello to take part in region competition. In Class A Region 6, both the Williamsburg High School boys and girls teams were able to capture runner-up honors. In addition to that, junior Selena Mattingly once again became region champion when she finished the varsity girls race with a time of 20:38.06. Teammate Abigail Schwarz finished third in the girls race with a time of 22:17. 51.
