Celebration at Cumberland Falls next week shouldn’t be missed

Date:

Ever since former Corbin Tourism Director Maggy Monhollen took over as the park manager at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park it seems like there has been one exciting announcement after another. That should come as no surprise to anyone who knows Maggy, as she is all about fun and excitement. She is also a real pro at promoting special events that she is a part of, such as the upcoming 100 Years of Parks Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 31.

Cumberland Falls is joining parks all across the state this year to celebrate the centennial of Kentucky State Parks. It is a momentous occasion, and if you would like to be a part of the festivities there will be plenty of opportunities next week.

According to some social media posts that I saw recently, it sounds like the party will actually kick off on Friday, Aug. 30, with a s’mores night event at the Ridgeline Campground. Those attending will be able to enjoy their “fireside dessert” beginning at 8 p.m. with s’mores kits being sold for $2 each at the campground grocery. I assume this is weather pending, so fingers crossed for no rain.

Saturday will be packed with things to do, including free live music at the Dupont Lodge between 6-8 p.m., and a birthday cake to celebrate Kentucky State Parks turning 100.

There will be plenty of fun activities for kids Saturday afternoon and evening at the falls area, including inflatables, tie dye and face painting. I hear that none other than Bigfoot himself may even make an appearance or two, so be on the lookout!

In addition to all of this, all-day pool passes will be on sale Saturday for $5. I recently visited the pool at Cumberland Falls for the very first time with my family, and I was very impressed. The pool itself is plenty big enough to accommodate large groups of swimmers, and the two diving boards provided a lot of fun for those who wanted to make more of a splash.

There is a lot more going on down at Cumberland Falls next week than what I’ve mentioned here. If you would like to learn more, then I suggest you follow the park on Facebook in order to stay up-to-date on all the latest announcements. You can also give them a call at (606) 528-4121 to get more information.

I am hoping to be down at the falls myself next week to check out some of the festivities. It sounds like it’ll be a great time for all ages.

• Just briefly before I wrap up this column, I wanted to wish all of our coverage area football teams the best of luck as the 2024 season officially kicks off this week. As we do each year, we have compiled a special season preview section that you will find inserted in this week’s edition.

It’s hard to believe that we are already at the beginning of another new school year, and that fall sports are once again getting underway. In no time at all we’ll be gearing up for another basketball season, but we have several weeks of exciting football action to enjoy first.

Once again, good luck to everyone and we’ll see you on the sidelines!
