Corbin Arena to get new digital sign

Date:

The Corbin Arena will be getting a new digital sign.

Corbin City Manager Scott Williamson told the Corbin City Commission during its regular monthly meeting Monday that the framework for the sign, which is at the bottom of the Arena Drive hill, was damaged in a storm. He also noted that the sign was becoming outdated.

Corbin Information Technology Director Josh Hunt said that parts for the sign are no longer being produced, and it is difficult to find people to service it.

The existing sign also has limitations in that it is only connected to one computer at the Corbin Arena.

Williamson noted that because a new sign will cost more than $40,000, the city commission will have to advertise for bids, which it voted to do Monday.

Also, during Monday’s meeting, the city commission voted to close a portion of Corbin Center Drive to accommodate construction on an expansion at the Corbin Center.

Corbin Economic Development Director Bruce Carpenter said that the road closure is necessary because the construction company will need a place to lay materials needed for the construction. The partial road closure will largely be the area directly in front of the construction site between The Corbin Center and the new TownePlace Suites/Fairfield Inn by Marriott.

People will still be able to access The Corbin Center by taking an alternative route.

From Cumberland Falls Highway, turn onto Arena Drive and drive past Speedway on the left and Applebee’s on the right. After you pass Ernie’s Spirits, take the next left onto the still to be named new backage road. Go a few hundred yards and then turn right onto Corbin Center Drive and go up the hill to the facility.

In addition, during Monday’s meeting, the city commission discussed the success of the recent Nibroc Festival.

Corbin City Manager Scott Williamson said that he thought this year’s festival was a resounding success, and he thanked everyone involved, including the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the festival, and Carpenter, who also serves as executive director of the chamber.

Carpenter thanked the city and the numerous people and departments involved for their work.

This year’s festival included a visit by Congressman Andy Barr, who is running for U.S. Senate next year.

Officials added that there was only one incident during this year’s festival and that first responders were on the scene in less than one minute.

Williamson added that he is also impressed each year with how quickly city workers get things cleaned up after the festival.
