A local man is facing auto theft and mail theft charges among other offenses in connection with a stolen vehicle last week that was recovered in the Gray community of Knox County.
On Aug. 6, the Knox County Sheriff’s Department arrested David Boggs, 37, of Corbin, charging him with third-degree fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest, menacing, theft of mail matter and theft by unlawful taking (auto).
About 5 p.m., Knox County Sheriff Mike Smith and deputies responded to a report about a stolen vehicle being spotted at Crossroads Market on US25E in Gray. The vehicle, a white 2017 Kia sedan, had been reported stolen from a residence on KY 1803 in Barbourville about 5:45 a.m. that morning, according to a sheriff’s department release.
“When the driver was confronted at Crossroads Market, he fled on foot. When deputies checked the vehicle, they observed a bag containing suspected stolen mail belonging to several different people,” the release stated.
Smith and deputies continued to search the area for the driver, who had been identified as David Boggs of Corbin. While still in the area, police were notified that Boggs allegedly attempted to break into a residence on KY 233 near the sawmill in Gray.
When police arrived at the residence, they observed Boggs allegedly run into the woods. After a foot pursuit, Boggs was arrested and lodged in the Knox County Detention Center, according to the release.
