He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mabel Bledsoe Sherman.
David was a hardworking and talented craftsman who spent his career as a self-employed auto body repairman. He took great pride in his work and helping countless people get back on the road.
He was a very talented auto restoration expert and brought many antique autos back to life and original condition. His greatest accomplishment was building a fully functional Ford Model A with an all wooden body. He took great pride and joy in showing it off and saying, “You probably won’t find another like it” and “It ain’t gonna rust but I will have to worry about termites.”
His restoration skills were not limited to cars alone but also to music instruments as he enjoyed refurbishing banjos, guitars, mandolins and fiddles, often starting with only pieces and hand-making parts until a finish playable instrument was completed.
He had a deep love for music, finding joy in playing and sharing his passion with those around him.
He played the fiddle in a unique way known only as the OLD MOUNTAIN STYLE which was prominent before bluegrass came along. He enjoyed visiting and learning from many of the old master musicians of Appalachia and was even taught by Marion Sumner who was the fiddle player in the movie “The Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Over the years he and his wife Lois played festivals, shows, and events across Appalachia, and were regulars on the Saturday night shows at Renfro Valley, KY.
David’s kindness, dedication, and love will be forever remembered by his family and friends.
A funeral service honoring David Sherman will be held on Wednesday, February 12, at 1:00 pm in the chapel of House-Rawlings Funeral Home with Dennis Gibbs and Claude Maggard officiating.
