Three out of the News Journal’s four coverage area teams were defeated on the road in week 4.
The Corbin Redhounds traveled to Somerset for a matchup against the Pulaski County Maroons where one team would taste defeat for the first time this season. This high profile encounter between two of the state’s top programs definitely lived up to the hype, but in the end it was the Redhounds who walked away with their first mark in the loss column after falling by the final score of 35-28.
Coach Luke Salmons squad will regroup this week and prepare for another tough test when the Class 6A Frederick Douglass Mustangs come to town on Friday, Sept. 19. Douglass took a talented Highlands team to double overtime in their season opener before losing, 21-20. That was followed by back-to-back losses against a pair of quality opponents in Trinity and DuPont Manual before they finally were able to get their first win of the season, defeating visiting Tates Creek this week, 40-7.
In other week 3 action, the Whitley County Colonels’ current woes continue after they made the trip to London and were shutout by the South Laurel Cardinals, 49-0. This was Whitley’s third straight loss since their season opening victory over Knox Central. They will host the undefeated Bell County Bobcats at Colonel Stadium next week.
The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets were also disappointed on the road this week, traveling to Sayre and falling by the final score of 41-16. The Jackets do not have another game scheduled until Oct. 3, when they will open up district play by hosting the Pineville Mountain Lions.
The only coverage area team who managed to pick up a win in week 4 was the Lynn Camp Wildcats, who defeated visiting Thomas Walker, VA Friday night, 34-14. The 3-1 Wildcats will host the winless Jackson County Generals next week.
