A Lily woman was killed Thursday morning when her car was struck by a CSX train.
Kentucky State Police identified the woman as Marna K. McCulley, 64.
The accident happened at about 9:00 a.m. Thursday at the CSX railroad crossing on Arkle Hollow Road, in the Gray community of Knox County. Apparently, the train was coming around a curve and collided with the Chevrolet Monte Carlo on the tracks, pushing it several hundred feet beyond the crossing. There are no lights, signals or crossing gates at the crossing.
The train was an empty coal train that was heading south toward Barbourville at the time of the crash. According to CSX officials, it had just left the yard at Corbin en route to Stilesville, Ga., located northwest of Atlanta. It was made up of three locomotives and 110 coal cars.
West Knox Volunteer Fire Department members were the first to respond to the scene. Kentucky State Police Trooper Jay Sowders isinvestigating the incident. Baily Switch Volunteer Department and Knox EMS assisted at the scene.
