Current Whitley County Jailer Ken Mobley was selected by the Republican Party of Whitley County to be its representative in November’s General Election.
Interim Whitley County Jailer Ken Mobley, who lost the Republican primary for jailer slightly more than one year ago, is once again the Republican nominee for the job.
Mobley filed paperwork in the Whitley County Clerk’s Office Thursday afternoon to seek the position during November’s election.
Mobley lost the May 2010 Republican primary for jailer to Les Moses, and left office Jan. 2, 2011 when his term expired.
Moses resigned on Jan. 10, and asked Whitley County Judge-Executive Pat White Jr. to appoint Mobley back to the position, which White did on an interim basis.
Mobley’s appointment as interim jailer lasts until the results of the November election are certified at which time the winner of the election will serve out the remaining three years of the term, which runs though the end of 2013.
If the resignation had occurred by Jan. 3 or more than 134 days before the primary election, then there would have been the normal filing deadline and primary process to select candidates for the General Election, said Whitley County Clerk Kay Schwartz.
Instead, state law dictated that the Republican Party and the Democratic Party would each nominate a candidate by Aug. 9 at 4 p.m., whose name will appear on the November ballot.
The Whitley County Republican Party accepted resumes for the position until May 31.
Mobley’s paperwork Thursday also included a certificate of nomination signed by Whitley County Republican Party Chairwoman Nancy Jones and Secretary Shannon Rickett.
The Whitley County Republican Party Executive Committee met on June 29 to nominate a candidate for the position of Whitley County Jailer.
"We certify that a quorum was present at said meeting and that by majority vote of the members of said committee, Ken Mobley, who possesses the qualifications for said office, was duly nominated as the Republican Party’s candidate for Jailer in the election on Nov. 8, 2011, and request that you place the name on the ballot," the form stated.
