A North Carolina man is being held in the Whitley County Detention Center in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond after being arrested by Williamsburg police Sunday for allegedly having sex with a teenage juvenile.
Williamsburg Police Officer Greg Rhoades arrested Dwight Gregory Gray, 23, of High Point, on Sunday for third-degree rape.
Gray allegedly picked up a 13-year-old juvenile from a Williamsburg residence and took her to a local motel where he allegedly had sexual intercourse with her, according to an arrest citation.
Williamsburg Police got involved after getting a request from the parent of the 13-year-old because a man in his 20s allegedly had sex with the girl and followed Gray, Williamsburg Police Officer Mike Taylor wrote on an arrest citation.
Rhoades and Sgt. Elijah Hunter stopped Gray in the parking lot of a local bank and told him that they needed him to ride down to the police department to discuss the allegations being made in reference to him, Taylor wrote.
Gray allegedly refused to and said he would take his car. Rhoades and Hunter told him that was not how this works. Gray allegedly started to step away, and Taylor grabbed his wrist to put handcuffs on him, according to the citation.
Gray allegedly started pulling away from Taylor and was taken to the ground and then handcuffed. He was taken to the police department for questioning and then to the jail for processing, Taylor wrote.
Taylor also charged Gray with resisting arrest and drug paraphernalia.
Judge Fred White entered a not guilty plea for Gray during his arraignment Monday in Whitley District Court.
He set a $50,000 cash bond for Gray, which covers both cases. White appointed the public advocate’s office to represent Gray and scheduled a Jan. 20 preliminary hearing in the rape case.
As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Gray remained incarcerated in the Whitley County Detention Center, according to the detention center’s website.
