This week, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets varsity baseball team hosted a youth baseball camp at Briar Creek Park. In addition to teaching young players the basics of the game, Head Coach Brennen Patrick said that it’s also about establishing relationships that will benefit the program in the years to come.
“We want to give something back to the community, and give something to these kids who will be coming up soon,” said Patrick. “These kids will be our future.”
Patrick and his assistants, including some current Yellow Jacket players, have welcomed in between 30-40 campers this week. Some of those attending were part of this summer’s recently concluded Little League season.
“I got to go to several games, which was fun for me,” Patrick said of this summer’s Williamsburg’s Little League competitions. “What they’re doing with Little League in the city is awesome. The All-Stars did really well, and I think that the future is bright.”
Patrick completed his first season as head coach of the Yellow Jackets this past spring. The team won only two games, but the general feeling is that the program is headed in the right direction.
“The win-loss column wasn’t great,” Patrick admitted. “We didn’t win a lot, but the boys had fun. The most important thing going forward is that they came out of it with a positive attitude. It wasn’t the season that we necessarily wanted, but there were a lot of positives and I think that next year will be much better for us.”
Patrick said that he was pleased with the turnout for this week’s youth camp, and he plans on doing more camps similar to this one in the future.
