Progress Rail in Corbin to close

Date:

The Progress Rail fabrication shop in Corbin is set to close sometime in the coming months.

The News Journal received a tip of the pending closure Friday morning. The Corbin location is one of many nationwide, with Progress Rail’s corporate offices being based out of Albertville, Alabama.

Officials at the Corbin shop deferred all questions to the corporate office.

Amy Everett, communications director for the Progress Rail, confirmed the closure Friday via phone.

Following the confirmation, a statement was received via email from Clint W. Sabin, senior media relations representative for the company, which stated: “Progress Rail recently notified its employees it will close its fabrication facility in Corbin, Kentucky to better utilize capacity and improve cost competitiveness. A gradual ramp down of activities is expected to be complete by early 2023.”

No additional details, including the precise date of when employees were notified or how many employees will be impacted by the closure, was provided. Everett stated that employee information “could not be shared.”

Additional information will be provided as it is learned.
