A "state of emergency" has been declared in Whitley County due to large amounts of snowfall, choking off roadways throughout the county.
Whitley County Judge-Executive Pat White Jr. issued the formal declaration Monday night. County and state road crews worked throughout the night to clear off snow that accumulated in amounts from 8 to 13 inches throughout the county Tuesday.
Motorists are encouraged to stay off roadways and avoid travel if at all possible in the near term.
The declaration calls for the local emergency management plan to be implemented, and allows White to waive normal procedures and formalities regarding contracts, expenditure of funds, rental of equipment, etc. to deal with the situation.
In a similar move, Williamsburg Mayor Roddy Harrison issued a citywide curfew on Monday that requires residence to be at home by 10:00 p.m. The curfew is in effect for Tuesday as well.
In Corbin, City Hall will reopen Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. The Recycling Center and the McBurney Recreation Center are both closed Tuesday. Residential garbage pickup in Corbin has been suspended until weather permits it to resume.
