WCHS wrestling Head Coach Justin Bozeman with junior wrestler River Lawson
Over the weekend, the Whitley County Colonels wrestling team competed in the Region 7 meet at Bryan Station High School in Lexington.
Head Coach Justin Bozeman said that he was pleased with the overall performance of his team, especially junior River Lawson, who qualified for state competition in the 195-pound weight class with a fourth place finish at the event.
“I think he is going to do fine,” said Bozeman of Lawson going to state. “Making it to the state level out of Region 7, which includes several schools from the Lexington area, is a great accomplishment.”
When asked about his feelings on qualifying for state, Lawson said, “It is unreal. If you would’ve told me at the beginning of the season that I would be wrestling at state, I would’ve said you were crazy. I couldn’t have done this without God’s help.”
“There will be a ton of talented wrestlers up there,” Lawson continued. “I expect it to be a struggle, so I am just going to have to put in the work at practice and wrestle as hard as I can when the time comes.”
The KHSAA state wrestling championships will be held this Friday and Saturday, February 20-21 at the Alltech Arena in Lexington.

UPDATE: Due to weather concerns, the KHSAA state wrestling championships have been rescheduled to March 9-11.
