Still need to pay your taxes? Sheriff’s Dept. open Saturday (April 1)

Date:

For those still owing 2022 property taxes in Whitley County, there is some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department will be open this Saturday, April 1, from 8 a.m. – noon to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to pay their property taxes before they are turned over to the Whitley County Clerk’s Office after the close of business on April 17.

Now for the bad news.

Beginning Monday, April 3, through Monday, April 17, pursuant to state law, the sheriff’s office will not be allowed to accept personal checks as a form of payment on taxes.

Acceptable forms of payment will be certified checks, cashier’s checks, credit cards and cash.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but it’s necessary to avoid receiving any returned checks after the delinquent taxes are turned over to the clerk on April 17,” Sheriff Bill Elliotte wrote.

Once tax bills are transferred to the Whitley County Clerk’s Office the penalties increase substantially.

Whitley County Clerk Carolyn Willis warned that after the first five days of tax collections on the 2022 property tax bills in her office then the penalties increase by about 30 percent.
