The Whitley County Board of Education met for the Feb. 17 meeting to recognize a local elementary team for a state championship.
Superintendent John Siler recognized the Whitley Central Intermediate cheerleading team for their first-place finish in the Elementary Small Traditional division at the 2025 Kentucky Association of Pep Organization Sponsors (KAPOS) traditional cheerleading competition, making the team state champions.
The cheerleading squad performed a two-and-a-half-minute routine to secure the first-place position.
“What an accomplishment to go and win at the state level,” said Siler. “This is a great experience, but the learning experience from this is all the hard work, dedication, just being good people, good teammates, and that is something that you young ladies can look back and draw from for the rest of your life.”
Siler explained pizza was bought for the team, as well as state championship t-shirts that the board bought for them.
“You ladies know what hard work looks like,” said Siler. “You know where it can take you. So just continue to do that.”
A certificate was presented by the board to each member.
The members recognized were Emory Adkins, Jasmyn Averill, Abbygail Carpenter, Hannah Caudell, Addison Davis, Lillyan Huddleston, Noelle Lanham, Hadley Moses, Bailey Richardson, KK Rose, Sophie Stine, Ava Taylor, Abbi Trent, Aubree Wagers, Natalie West, and RaiLynn Whitehead.
