Whitley County Public Library hosts Play with Purpose event to promote kindergarten readiness

Date:

The Whitley County Public Library (WCPL) is hosting a Play with Purpose program designed to help parents work with children ages 3-5 on developmental, sensory, and independence skills.

WCPL Children’s Librarian Stacie Davis discovered the program from The National Center for Family Learning at a conference and was inspired to bring it to the library.

Since Whitley County had not previously participated in a program from this organization, they were eligible to join.

Play with Purpose is a 9-week initiative designed to support families seeking to enhance their children’s learning and development. The program also helps prepare children for kindergarten readiness.

“The parents get some skills each time they come, and then the children will get a free book and toy each week,” said Davis.

Participation is limited to 15 registered children, with registration expected to close around Jan. 26. While only children ages 3-5 will be officially registered, younger siblings are welcome to attend with their families. Due to limited spots, early registration is encouraged.

“Any time that you are spending with your child and reading is going to be positive,” said Davis. “I think this is a great opportunity for children to have more interaction with their adult caregiver while in a place where they’re being encouraged to learn, read, and play.”

The program is research-based and supported by a coach who provides ongoing guidance to the instructors.

The program begins on Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at 285 South 3rd St. in Williamsburg. Snacks will be provided for each session.

At the end of the nine weeks, WCPL will host a celebration to recognize families for their participation.

For more information, visit the Whitley County Public Library website www.whitleylibrary.org or their Facebook page, or call at (606) 549-0818. On the flyer, you will find a QR code you can use to register for the program.
