The Corbin Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, July 15 in the library at Corbin Elementary School, recognizing the departure of Corbin Superintendent Dave Cox, praising him for his success after 33 years, as well as recognizing Amy Floyd, representing Partners for Rural Impact (PRI), an organization that invests in and provides opportunities for rural youth.
Dave Cox, Corbin Superintendent, was thanked for his long-standing leadership and contributions to Corbin Independent Schools (CIS)
Carcille Burchette, member of the Corbin Board of Education, said, “The Corbin Board of Education recognizes your 33 years and one month of service as teacher, coach, principal, administrator, and superintendent of Corbin Independent Schools.”
She continued to praise Cox on behalf of the Board of Education by saying, “You have served with dedication and pride to our students, staff, faculty, administration, and community… we thank you on behalf of all Redhounds.”
Also recognized was Amy Floyd, representing PRI.
PRI stays committed to ensuring that every kid, regardless of zip code, can thrive and succeed.
In collaboration with PRI, CIS received a call informing them that a Paxton Patterson Career Lab was being delivered to the middle school. They plan to do the installation for that in the upcoming weeks. It plans to bring career pathways to the middle school so students can try them out. They are two-week modules, including cosmetology and barbering, and welding. PRI fully funded ten and provided them to CIS.
There was also discussion about possible internships once they get into the high school level.
After receiving thanks and praise, Floyd said, “It is a true pleasure to serve students.”
Also mentioned, University of the Cumberlands plans to eliminate the dual credit fee, allowing assistance to more students to be able to take those classes in the fall.
There was an update on the Carnegie building with renovations, mentioning there are still some questions regarding the verbiage.
Other personnel actions and items were acknowledged without discussion.
Cox receives high marks on final summative assessment
Corbin Superintendent Dave Cox has received a final Summative Assessment rating of Exemplary in all areas following his evaluation by the Corbin Board of Education (BOE) on Tuesday, July 15.
The Corbin Board of Education states, “From our discussion and evaluation, we have given a final Summative Assessment scoring of Exemplary in all areas.” Exemplary, which is the highest rating, means exceeds the standard.
The assessment, completed in executive session, was based on the state’s Superintendent Professional Growth and Effectiveness System, or SPGES, which evaluates leadership across seven performance standards of the Superintendent Leadership Plan document.
Throughout his 33 years with the district, and especially during his time as superintendent, Cox was known for prioritizing safety, transparency, and collaboration. He worked closely with school and city officials on safety walks and updates to facilities, and made a point to welcome new staff and students while supporting those already there. He was described as someone who constantly encouraged others to “Strive to Be Our Best.”
In addition to leadership skills, Cox was also recognized for his ability to involve parents and community partners in school initiatives.
The board’s report read, “Working together, we can increase our level of parent and community partner involvement to an even higher level which makes us all stronger.”
Now, as he prepares to retire, the district is reflecting on all he’s helped accomplish, from navigating past hardships to overseeing construction and renovations, all while keeping staff and students at the center of every decision.
The board’s report read, “Mr. Dave Cox, you have been the best. Thank you for your years of service to our school system.”
