A spark from a welding torch is being blamed for a fire that damaged C&H Storage on Ky. 26 and destroyed the contents.
Firefighters were called to the scene across from Whitley Gardens about 3:30 p.m. to battle the fire sparked by a welding torch someone was using to cut bolts off pickup truck inside.
Firefighters from Three Points, Rockholds, Emelyn and Williamsburg City fire departments sent trucks, tankers and/or manpower to help extinguish the blaze.
It wasn’t just the heat from the building, which scorched and warped the metal wall that firefighters were battling. According to the National Weather Serivce, temperatures Tuesday afternoon reached the 90s with, leaving firefighters working to stay cool. Several firefighters fought the blaze without their helmets and turnout gear.
Firefighters used hooks to rip off sections of the metal walls in several places so they could get at the contents of the building, described as a hodgepodge of items.
"It is residential a commercial storage," one witness said when asked what was in the building.
