Missing hiker found safe near Cumberland Falls

Date:

A hiker missing since midday Sunday was found early Monday morning and was reportedly unharmed. Thirty-nine-year-old David Sumner was located near the dry land bridge, which is near the Cumberland Falls.

Rescue officials from Whitley and McCreary Counties mounted a search effort for the hiker Sunday evening. He had been missing since about 1:00 p.m. Saturday.

Authorities tell the News Journal that the family of Sumner alerted a park ranger to his disappearance. He was last seen on Trail 1 which goes to Noe’s Dock. He was alone, but officials said he was a experienced hiker. He had reportedly a lighter, water and snacks with him before he went missing.

A ground search was underway late Saturday evening by the Williamsburg Fire Department, Williamsburg Rescue Squad, the McCreary County Rescue Squad and the Whitley County Department of Emergency Services.
