Corbin Police say both drivers had been drinking prior to a wreck involving a car and an ATV at the intersection of Master Street and Commonwealth Ave. late Friday night.
Major Rob Jones, the department’s public affairs officer, said police and emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene just before midnight.
The driver the of ATV, 22-year-old Kyle Robinson, and his 13-year-old passenger were thrown from the vehicle when the Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by a 17-year-old attempted to turn left from Master Street and struck the ATV, head-on.
Robinson and the teen landed in a ditch near the road,” Jones said, adding that police found a bottle of rum in a storage compartment on the ATV.
Robinson and the 13-year-old were taken by ambulance to Trademart Shopping Center where a helicopter-landing zone had been established. From there, they were flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment of head injuries and broken bones, Jones said.
Jones said neither the 17-year-old nor a 17-year-old passenger in the car sustained any injuries. The driver was cited for driving under the influence – first offense – aggravating circumstances and second-degree assault and released to the custody of a parent.
Jones said Robinson is facing multiple charges including riding an ATV on the roadway, endangering the welfare of a minor and failure to wear a helmet.
Jones said a subpoena has been issued for Robinson’s blood sample to determine whether he was legally intoxicated at the time.
“When he gets out of the hospital, he is probably going to jail,” Jones said of Robinson.
Master Street was shut down while police conducted the investigation.
Corbin Fire Department and Knox County EMS were also called to the scene.
