London-Corbin Airport gets grant for new hanger

The London/Corbin Airport has been awarded a $764,040 grant to fund the construction of a new hanger. The Corbin City Commission authorized Mayor Willard McBurney to sign all of the necessary documents related to the grant at a special called meeting Friday morning. Airport Manager Larry Corum said he received notification about the grant last Tuesday. The grant will finance the construction of a 100x100 hanger with a door that is 26 feet tall and is able to open 92 feet. Baptist Health radiologist to speak at chamber luncheon Tuesday

Baptist Health Group radiologist Dr. Kevin Croce will be the featured speaker Tues., Sept. 13, at the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce monthly membership luncheon. The luncheon will be held at The Corbin Center and begins at 11:45 a.m. Dr. Croce earned a medical degree in 2004 from the University of Louisville, School of Medicine. He completed a transitional residency in 2005 from Indiana University School of Medicine, and a diagnostic radiology residency in 2009 from the University of Kentucky Medical Center. July unemployment rate drops locally

Unemployment rates fell in 93 Kentucky counties between July 2015 and July 2016, including Whitley, Knox and Laurel counties, but rose in 27 counties, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. Whitley County's unemployment rate fell from 7.4 percent in July 2015 to 6.9 percent in July 2016. This was a 0.4 percent decrease from the June's rate. Whitley County tied Livingston County with the 38th highest July unemployment rate in Kentucky. Knox County's unemployment rate fell from 8.9 percent in July 2015 to 8.0 percent in July 2016. $583,000 grant for Grace Community Health project finalized

The Corbin City Commission approved the contract for a $583,000 grant to fund construction of the road and utility access to the planned Grace Community Health medical campus on the Corbin bypass. At a special called meeting Friday morning, the commissioners unanimously approved a resolution for the grant and authorizing Mayor Willard McBurney to sign any and all documents related to the grant that comes through the Kentucky Department for Local Government. Signs of life at Tri-County Country Club

More than a year after it was closed down, there are signs of life at the Tri-County Country Club. Cutting its way through the high grass that has taken over the nine-hole course located off of Ky. 1232 Thursday and Friday, was a John Deere tractor driven by former member Joe Roberts of Corbin. Roberts declined to comment pending the completion of the deal. Roberts’ fiance´, Crystal Lester, posted on her Facebook pictures a series of photos showing the work to cut and bail the former fairways. Lester added that the goal is to have it open by April 1. Season’s Restaurant hosting second round of tour bus stops

Following up the success of the spring tours, Season’s Restaurant in Corbin will be hosting seven additional Tauck Tours tour bus stops in Corbin. Season’s co-owner Shea Hensley said the first bus of 44 people travelling between Louisville and the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina will be making a lunch stop in downtown Corbin Friday. Whitley, Knox make progress toward ‘work readiness’ certification

Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet Secretary Hal Heiner announced August 18, 2016 that Knox and Whitley Counties have been certified as a Kentucky Work Ready Community in Progress. Restaurant owner claims city reneged on tax deal

One of the three restaurant owners that Corbin officials have elected to pursue legal action against over unpaid restaurant taxes claims the city has gone back on its word. Dino Alxiou, owner of Dino’s restaurant, said he made a payment last Monday and expects to be current by September. “They promised us that if we made another payment that our name would never be on any list,” Alxiou said. The three-percent restaurant tax, which was enacted in 2006, is collected on a quarterly (three months) basis.
