NIBROC cancellation is a punch to the gut

I knew it was coming, but still, it didn’t make it any easier to hear the news last Wednesday that this year’s NIBROC festival has been officially called off. Over the past eight years or so I have really grown to love downtown Corbin’s annual festival. As an employee of the News Journal, I am always right in the middle of the action. Not only am I responsible for helping report on the event itself, but over time I have become more and more involved with some of the behind-the-scenes efforts as well. For several years now I have assisted former News Journal Publisher Trent Knuckles with the presentation of the...

For many folks, COVID-19 appears to already be a thing of the past

Let me preface this column by saying I am not a medical expert, and my intention here is not to give my “professional opinion” about anything concerning the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With that being said, it is clear to me that a large chunk of our population is simply no longer concerned about any potential threats that the virus still poses. It’s just an observation, so interpret it however you wish. My family and I spent a few days in the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area of Tennessee last week, and before you start telling me how stupid I am for going to a place like that at a time like this,...

What’s Happening: Butcher’s Pub grand opening take two, and the return of the Cruise-In

I am very excited about my column this week. For the first time in a while I am actually able to look ahead on my calendar and talk about what WILL BE happening instead of what should have, would have or could have been happening. Rejoice! As we continue to re-emerge as a society from this spring’s coronavirus-induced lockdown, we are finally able to start getting back out and enjoying ourselves again. I pray that we won’t see a second spike in cases after all the mass protests and rioting that has taken place across the country in recent weeks, but let’s not even go there. Let’s just focus on...

Get some exercise while helping a great cause

Last week I saw a Facebook post about a virtual run/walk/ride/swim event to help benefit hunger relief efforts in our region. The event is being presented by Together for Hope Appalachia. They are described on their website as a “rural development coalition which follows the practice of asset-based community development, believing that the key to alleviating poverty in these rural areas already exists with the people who are there.” Keith Stillwell is the event coordinator. He lives in Danville and explained to me in a phone interview that the main goal is to help raise money for food banks, including banks that operate in our immediate area here in the...

Keep a close eye on your pocket change

Against my better judgement, I am going to let you all in on a little secret - be on the lookout for any 2019 or 2020 quarters that have a little “W” mintmark on the front. They are worth much more than your typical quarter. Now, by telling you this I run the risk of you finding and keeping some of these special coins, meaning there will be less for me to add to my own personal collection, but hey, that’s just the kind of guy I am. What makes these quarter so special, you ask? Allow me to explain... Most all quarters you find in circulation will be stamped with either...

Senior parade way cooler than anything I did for graduation

This past Sunday afternoon I took some photos of the Lynn Camp High School senior parade, and I have to admit, I found myself feeling just a little bit jealous. Listen, I know that the coronavirus pandemic has robbed our seniors of many things this year. That is not in question, and they all definitely have my sympathies. But as far as a graduation celebration goes, trust me, you guys are having WAY more fun than anyone in my graduating class ever did. When I think back to when I graduated high school in 2005 I remember sitting in a hot, crowded gym. I remember being bored, and wishing I could...

What’s Happening: Could we truly be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel?

Last week Governor Andy Beshear made some very exciting announcements regarding the re-opening of businesses and organizations in the Commonwealth as we continue to move toward getting life back to normal in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Among those announcements was a May 22 deadline for restaurants to open back up, but with a limited capacity. Of course, this means that an immediate return to packed houses won’t be possible, but if all goes well we could see people being able to go back INSIDE their favorite establishments in the very near future. Some is certainly better than none, and my fingers are crossed that there will be no...

Thanks to everyone who took part in our School Spirit Week

This What's Happening with Trevor Sherman column appeared in the April 29, 2020 print edition of the News Journal... Recently I had the idea to do a “School Spirit Week” social media campaign. It came to me, I believe, as I was mowing the yard at my house one evening, and basically the premise was just to ask folks to go online each day for a week (Mon-Fri), posting photos of themselves in school gear using one of five special hashtags. Last Monday, Whitley County opened up our Spirit Week with a bang, flooding Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with photos and the hashtag #ColonelStrong2020. I was really blown away with how...

Much has changed in a short amount of time

Although it seems like it’s been much longer, it was only a few short weeks back that I debuted a new column here in the News Journal called “What’s Happening.” The whole premise of this column was to take a look at things happening in and around our local community, and talk about them. A pretty simple concept, and under normal circumstances there is certainly no shortage of subject matter. However, pretty much right after I debuted the column our circumstances quickly shifted from “normal” to anything but thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. For the past several weeks it’s been more like “What’s NOT Happening,” but this week I am taking...
