Letter to the Editor: Never trust a ‘broken’ radio

To the Editor: In March 1951, I was serving with the Marine Security Guard detachment at the top secret U.S. Naval Air Missile Test Center at Point Mugu, Calif. My assignment was base patrol operator in a radio equipped jeep. Late one afternoon I was instructed to take three Marine sentries to the chow hall but was informed by the patrol driver coming off duty that the jeep’s radio was out of order. After we ate, the sentries and I set out to deliver food to the night patrol protecting the radar on top of Laguna Peak. As we crossed the coastal highway, one of the sentries, Private First Class Dudley, started...

Letter to the editor: Local Toys for Tots organizer says 2018 was a huge success

To the Editor: I wish to share our success, with the Marine Corps Toys For Tots Campaign 2018 and thank the many people, businesses and groups that helped us provide “A Little Christmas” to many children, of Whitley, Knox and Laurel Counties. I would like to recap and compare 2017 to 2018. In 2017, our first year, we helped 1,600 children receive over 5,000 toys and 3,000 books. In 2018, we provided 11,868 toys, 8,901 books and countless stocking stuffers to 2,976 children. This is a 86% increase over 2017. Without the support of the communities, this would not have happened. Thanks to the fantastic help of Hearthside Food Solutions, Wildcat Harley...

Letter to the editor: America did a lot of ‘winning’ in 2018; can we take much more?

To the Editor: Can we stand making America great in 2019 - considering how successful 2018 has been? The stock market lost more value on Christmas Eve except for Christmas Eve 1931, in the depression. We have separated and harmed thousands of children, separating them from their parents at our southern border - and many may never be reunited. This is exasperated by the tragic death of two children in the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol. That’s really making us great. We have had more associates of the President indicted than at any time in our history. Isn’t that great? One of the great things about America is our national parks, national monuments, and...

Letter to the Editor: Lions Club still accepting Christmas basket donations

To the Editor: The Corbin Lions Club continues to accept donations toward our annual Christmas Basket Program. This is our 70th consecutive year of providing food baskets to local families during the Christmas season. Beginning with five baskets in 1949, we have delivered hundreds of baskets each year. Both Lions Club members and volunteers deliver these baskets on Christmas Eve morning. Each basket consists of enough food for a wonderful Christmas meal with plenty remaining for several more days. There are canned vegetables, fresh produce, flour, Pepsi, bread, canned ham, and breakfast foods. To purchase 228 baskets, we have set a monetary goal of $13,000. This goal can only be met with the...

Letter to the Editor: Local high school student gives ideas on how to battle drug use

To the Editor: There’s an old saying that, “idle minds do the devil’s work.” In the current climate of things, this couldn’t apply more to the impending drug epidemic we are currently facing in the Appalachia, and right here at home. Why are so many people resorting to drugs? The answer to the question doesn’t lie in the person, yet it lies mysteriously somewhere in the community and the people surrounding the abuser. There will never be a grand solution that will fix everything, but there’s a bounty of things that could be done to help prevent it. The drug crisis, more specifically opioids, is taking over, and what are we to...

Corbin resident says Shannon T. Hall best choice for mayor

To the Editor: I would like to say I would appreciate the way the newspaper presents the candidate’s and their views. I am writing to endorse Shannon T. Hall, a friend from my childhood. Shannon and bhis family have a servant’s heart, which reveals their actions. Hall is a hard worker and thinks of his fellow humans and the future of their city and children. He treats all people equal as well as the area they are from ... a man of faith, who wants them to be save and be protected. Shannon is a first responder with Oak Grove Fire Dept. I want to see the city keep a full-time fire...

Letter to the Editor: Eggfest planning committee thanks sponsors, participants

To the Editor,   On behalf of the Moonbow Eggfest Inc. Planning Committee, we would like to acknowledge both the sponsors and participants of the 2018 Moonbow Eggfest. On September 16, 2015 over 40 Eggheads from all over the Commonwealth and surrounding states gathered to light their Eggs and serve delicious recipes for the public. It was a beautiful day, and over 550 hundred individuals joined us for a fantastic, family friendly time that included tasting everything from stuffed pork tenderloin, to maple glazed donuts, hot off the Egg. There were six states represented at this year’s event. None of this would have been possible without the support of our sponsors, volunteers...

Letter: Chamber director thankful for NIBROC support

To the Editor: The 66th Annual NIBROC Festival was a great success, from set-up on Wednesday evening to clean-up on Saturday night. The extent of assistance and cooperation from the City of Corbin was tremendous and I’d like to thank everyone who had a part in helping with any and all aspects of NIBROC 2018. Wednesday evening went extremely well, despite a downpour during the vendor staging, much in part to the city workers, police officers, firefighters and chamber volunteers that weathered the storm to help get vendors in place. My sincere gratitude to all of the NIBROC sponsors and corporate chamber sponsors. Without our sponsors, there would be no NIBROC. To...
