Letter to the Editor: Reader won’t watch NFL or NBA games due to National Anthem protests

To the Editor: Several days ago on the Fox News, a group of illegal young men looking as if they were in their early 20s, were passing security supposedly without their parents. They sure looked much older than I as I left high school in my junior year to join the U.S. Marines. I was 17 as I answered our nation’s call. The evening we were marching down the streets of San Diego was an exciting time as we were in full battle dress with the Marine Corps. band in front. I was proud to be a part of the 3,600 Marines boarding our troop ship for Korea. The send off...

Letter to the Editor: Donate to ‘I Got Your Back’ t-shirt effort; let teens know you care

To the Editor: Please, if you are in a company or business and can please sponsor me with proceeds to put a t-shirt on every child in Whitley County’s back with the saying, “I GOT YOUR BACK.” I know and understand that this will be a costly endeavor, but I know God, our heavenly father, will bless you with the most joyful heart, especially if you still have a child or grandchild in the public school! We just can’t sit on this. As a former teacher I know what these angels endure. We can’t afford to lose another child to suicide! Yes, I’m asking for a lot, but may I tell...

Letter: Caldwell shares good memories of Dr. Don Barton

Dear Editor: I have had the pleasure and feel honored to have known Dr. Don Barton and his family for more than three (3) decades. I met him in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s at the Corbin Industrial Commission meetings. I had been participating in the recruitment of Industry into Corbin and the surrounding communities through the companies I worked for, Peoples Gas Co of Ky and parent Wiser Oil Company starting in the early 1970’s. I recall names of many of the Commission members who participated in the several successes that were achieved. When I later became involved with The Greater Chamber of Commerce as a member and...

To the Editor: April is Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Awareness Month and this year s theme is "Your Voice Has Power." How we talk about interpersonal violence matters. When we reflect on and change how we think and talk about the issue, we can create a culture of respect, equality and safety. There are many ways to embrace one s voice, from voicing your support for survivors to speaking out against victim blaming. We all have a role to play in preventing interpersonal violence in our community. Our actions, big and small, have a ripple effect on those we teach, guide and influence. From modeling healthy behavior to addressing inappropriate...

Letter: Second Amendment works if we just leave it alone

To the Editor: “The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed.” — Thomas Jefferson, letter to to John Cartwright, 5 June 1824. Violence and the law are not new issues. An 18th Century criminologist, Cesare Beccaria, put it this way; “The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes … Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for...
