Less than a week after unseating the incumbent Laurel County District 6 Constable, the constable-elect has hit the ground running after taking over the position early due to an unexpected resignation.
Constable Robert Smith handily won his bid for office during last week’s primary election over then-Constable David Griffith and Bobby Hall, garnering 64 percent of overall votes. And despite not being expected to take office until January 2023, Smith has already assumed the role, being appointed by Laurel County Judge/Executive David Westerfield May 19 following Griffith’s resignation.
Smith announced his early takeover Sunday via his Facebook page, where he said he wanted to make the people of District 6 aware...

As technology has continued to be integrated into every fabric of our daily lives, it has also grown in the ways it is used in education. Many school districts now use Chromebooks for a large portion of their instructional materials, which has given students more access to the internet than ever before. When teachers within the Whitley County School District return to their classes later this year, they will have a way to engage with, monitor and protect their students online, as the district expects to be implementing some new software to help streamline the classroom experience.
The new software, called Lightspeed Classroom Management, was discussed during the Whitley County...

With the approved raises, certified personnel—or faculty/staff positions—will receive a 3 percent bump in pay, while all classified positions—or non-teaching personnel—will be receiving a $1 hourly raise. As with other local school districts who have recently provided pay increases, Superintendent Tim Melton said that the raises were made possible due to new state legislation that allowed for...

The Whitley County Fiscal Court received a little more money this fiscal year than anticipated.
During its regularly called monthly meeting on May 17, the fiscal court held readings of two budget amendment ordinances.
One budget amendment relates to $1,065,640 in unbudgeted receipts from the occupational tax ordinance. $563,513 comes from the occupation license fee and $500,127 from the occupation net profits tax.
The occupational tax sharing agreement between the fiscal court, Corbin and Williamsburg allows the county to keep 100 percent of the occupational tax revenue generated in the county outside of either city limits. Occupational tax revenue inside the two cities is split with each city keeping 75 percent of...
