Local scout rehabs neglected cemetery for Eagle Leadership Service Project

A Corbin area Boy Scout has taken on a monumental task, removing more than 45 years of overgrowth from a small cemetery. Max Richardson, a senior at Corbin High School chose to clean up the overgrown McHargue Cemetery near the Corbin water tower as his Eagle Leadership Service Project. Life Scouts who are working to earn the rank of Eagle Scout must plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, school or to the local community. Angelika Lewis-Bowling, a victim's advocate for the Williamsburg City Police Department, has been selected as the narrator of the Kentucky Victim Assistance Academy (KVAA) scheduled to take place in September 2018. The KVAA was created by the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet in collaboration with the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office and the Kentucky Coalition against Domestic Violence. It is a week-long training program designed to provide new advocates and allied professionals throughout the state with best practices, knowledge and concrete skills for serving victims of crime. Woman gives birth in car outside Baptist ER with assistance from husband, hospital security guard

A Corbin area woman gave birth with the help of her husband and a hospital security guard when she was unable to reach Baptist Health Corbin in time Sunday. Kendra Bain gave birth to 7 pound, 14 ounce Wolfgang at 12:55 p.m., which she said was 15 minutes after she and her husband, Jerry Lawson, left their home off of Master Street. “It all happened within an hour,” Bain said. “I was home serving breakfast when the labor started. Two members of Corbin High School’s Class of 2017 are going where no Redhounds have gone before, Ivy League universities Princeton and Yale. Assistant Whitley County Attorney Gary Brittain, who died Friday, will be laid to rest today. Brittain, 67, has partnered with County Attorney Bob Hammons at their Corbin law firm for more than 30 years. “That’s my best friend,” Hammons said of Brittain. The Barbourville native earned his law degree from the University of Louisville in 1975. Brittain served in multiple capacities throughout his career as a prosecuting attorney, as an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Jefferson County, two terms as Knox County Attorney and as assistant county attorney under Hammons. After eight years of service, Corbin Board of Education member Angela Morris took her final bow at the board’s regular meeting last Thursday.
