A trio of ultra-competitive basketball games highlighted the sports action in our area Friday night. The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets hosted Corbin for a 50th District boys-girls double header Friday. The boys' game ended up being much closer than many fans expected it to be, but in the end the visiting Redhounds won 72-66 to improve to 3-1, 1-1 on the year. With the loss, the Jackets fall to 2-4, 0-1. The Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets hosted Knox Central Tuesday evening, while both the Whitley County Colonels and Lady Colonels were on the road. The Lady Jackets were able to get the 65-55 win over the visiting Lady Panthers, improving them to 2-0 to start out the season. The News Journal’s Sixth Annual NIBROC 3-on-3 Hoops Tournament once again produced some top-notch roundball action inside the Princess Vermillion McBurney Recreation Center, but in the end only one team was able to call themselves champions. The Eagles, a five-man squad co-captained by locals Travis Cowden and Isaac Wilson, were hoping to become the first-ever repeat champs in tournament history. But former Corbin High School, and Alice Lloyd College, standout Isaac Wilson has been the most consistently dominate presence at the annual NIBROC 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament over it’s six year existence. A week from this Saturday the News Journal’s annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament will return to the Princess Vermillion McBurney Recreation Center as part of the 2018 NIBROC festival. A press release sent out Friday by Whitley County High School Athletic Director John Siler said the following: A familiar face has been chosen to fill the head coaching position left vacant by the resignation of David Estes earlier this month. David Halcomb has been chosen to lead the Lady Colonels Basketball Program at Whitley County High School. He will be resigning as head coach of girls’ volleyball and the tennis team at the end of the 2018 season in order to assume the head basketball coaching position. On Thursday, Corbin Redhound Chandler Stewart signed on to become the newest member of the Alice Lloyd College men’s basketball team. Stewart played his senior season at Corbin after transferring from Lexington Christian Academy, helping lead the Redhounds to 50th District and 13th Region championship titles, as well as an appearance in the KHSAA boys’ Sweet 16 quarterfinals. The Corbin Redhounds ended their 2017-18 season Friday afternoon with a 73-62 loss to the Scott County Cardinals in the quarterfinal round of this year's KHSAA state championship tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington. With the loss, the Hounds wrap up their historic season with a 26-8 overall record. After the game, head coach Tony Pietrowski commented, "Obviously we’re disappointed with the loss, but I’m really proud of my kids, and the determination that they’ve shown throughout the year.
