With the girls’ 13th Region championship tournament set to tipoff later today (Monday), I have decided to do a special web-only column where I give my official predictions for how I think things will go. Monday’s action will include two first round games at the Corbin Arena. In game one, scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., the 52nd District champion Harlan County Lady Black Bears (25-2) will face the 51st District runner-up Pineville Lady Mountain Lions (18-11). With a 61-53 victory over the visiting South Laurel Cardinals Friday night, the Corbin Redhounds improved their season record to 22-7, and they successfully repeated as champions of the 50th District. The Whitley County Lady Colonels had an uncharacteristic off night shooting the ball, but a strong defensive effort kept them within reach of the South Laurel Lady Cardinals throughout Thursday night's 50th District championship game at Corbin High School. The Lady Colonels fought hard, but in the end the lack of offensive production was too much to overcome as they fell by the final score of 48-36. Regular season play in the 50th District wrapped up Thursday evening after a boys-girls double header between Williamsburg and South Laurel, and a boys game between Corbin and Whitley County. Both Williamsburg teams were defeated by South Laurel, with the boys losing 65-49 and the girls falling 64-39. The girls were up first, with the visiting Lady Colonels able to pick up their second win of the season over the rival Lady Hounds, this time by the final score of 53-39.
