Friday Night Highlights: High School Basketball Results for January 19, 2018

A pair of boys-girls double headers highlighted the high school basketball action in our coverage area Friday evening. Whitley goes 0-2 at South Laurel 50th District rivals Whitley County and South Laurel squared off in London, with both the Colonels and the Lady Colonels falling to the host Cards and Lady Cards. The boys game was a thriller, but South was able to hold on in the end, pulling out a narrow 57-53 victory. With the loss, Whitley now sits at 6-12 on the year, 0-2 in district play. Lynn Camp boys win 13th Region All “A” championship Thursday

As reported in Wednesday's print edition of the News Journal, the Lynn Camp Wildcats and the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets were both hopeful of qualifying to compete in this year's 13th Region All "A" championship game. As it turns out, both teams would qualify, meaning they would meet each other in the tournament finale Thursday evening at Middlesboro High School. Williamsburg defeated Harlan and Middlesboro en route to their appearance in the All "A" region championship, while Lynn Camp was able to best 51st District rivals Pineville and Barbourville in order to earn their spot. Lady Jackets win 13th Region All “A” championship Monday

With a 57-42 victory over Harlan Independent Monday evening, the Williamsburg Lady Jackets basketball team captured the program's first-ever 13th Region All "A" championship title. The win took place at Oneida Baptist Institute, who hosted this year's girls All "A" region tournament. The Lady Jackets, now 12-6 on the year, will advance to the 2018 All "A" state tournament, which is scheduled begin on Wednesday, January 24 at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. Four coverage area teams were in action Tuesday night, but only one walked away victorious... The Corbin Redhounds improved to 4-1 on the year with a hard fought win over visiting South Laurel in a showdown between two heated 50th District rival teams. The Hounds held on to a slim two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter of the contest, but a scoring run gave them some breathing room and helped lift them to a 62-56 win. With wins over Berea, Lexington Catholic and Lynn Camp this past week, the Whitley County Lady Colonels are now off to a perfect 6-0 start to the 2017-18 season.
