UC Women’s Wrestling Represented at University World Team Trials

The University of the Cumberlands Women's Wrestling program has shown immense growth since it began in 1998. The program started as an idea by former UC President Dr. Jim Taylor, when he placed an article in former Men’s Wrestling Head Coach Jess Wilder’s mailbox, about a brother and sister who wrestled for the same high school. Coach Wilder expressed his own interest in the idea and began to research the necessary components for a women’s team. The team began with just one wrestler in 1998 and by the 1999-2000 season, seven wrestlers were added to the roster. Six years into the newly established women’s wrestling program (2004), the first Patriot...

If you looked inside the News Journal’s February 10 sports section you probably noticed the full-color page congratulating the Corbin High School cheerleading team on recently becoming national champions. The CHS cheer squad won their first-ever national title over the weekend at the Universal Cheerleaders Associations’ national championship competition in Orlando, Florida. They beat out all other teams in the Medium Varsity Division II in order to earn their trophy, medals and jackets. One member of the Corbin cheerleading team, sophomore Abbey Norvell, was asked to share her experiences with us. Here is what she had to say… Since I was six years old, I’ve wanted a white satin jacket. Ten...

The University of the Cumberlands men’s and women’s lacrosse teams are readying themselves for their inaugural seasons in 2016. During last weekend’s homecoming festivities at UC, the Patriot men held an open practice session for family and fans to come see what lacrosse is all about. Prior to the practice, Head Coach Pete Campbell and a few of his players took the time to discuss how things have been going for the lacrosse team, as well as their hopes for the future of the program. When asked about what he would like everyone to know about lacrosse before the inaugural season gets underway, Coach Campbell said, “I’d like everyone to...

Local man overcomes life-threatening heart condition, places in body building competition

Nathan Smith was always interested in body building. He considered it a stress reliever, and said that he always had an interest inpursuing it competitively. That is, until receiving a pacemaker derailed his plans. Smith, a 32-year-old third grade teacher at Whitley Central Intermediate, said that he had to begin living with a pacemaker in 2010 when a condition known as heart block started giving him some serious problems. “My heart would just stop beating,” he said. “When I started passing out I knew something was wrong. The doctors gave me a heart monitor to wear. I wore it one night, and they wanted to put in the pacemaker the...

In a League of Her Own

If you knew nothing about 13-year-old (almost 14) Jaine Stephens, there is a good chance you may not be able to guess her sport of choice after you first see her. At just over 100 pounds, this eighth grader at Whitley County Middle School may not be the most intimidating figure you could imagine, but as the old saying goes, never judge a book by its cover. That old saying holds especially true for Stephens, as she is currently pinning several of her male counterparts to the mat as the only female member of the Colonels’ wrestling team. That’s right, not only can Jaine hold her own as a wrestler at...
