Saturday is deadline to register for Colonel Sanders Half Marathon/10K

Approximately 230 runners are slated to take to the streets of Corbin on Nov. 13 to compete in either the Colonel Sanders Half Marathon, or the accompanying 10K race. However, Corbin Tourism Director Maggy Monhollen, one of the event organizers, said there is plenty of room for additional competitors. While Monhollen emphasized that there will be no raceday signups, competitors have until 11:59 on Nov. 6 to enter. Entries may be completed online at www.colonelsandershalfmarathon.com. The entry fee is $90 for the half marathon or $60 for the 10K. “We can guarantee medals, but we cannot guarantee T-shirts,” Monhollen said of anyone who signs up going forward. Corbin High School adding wrestling teams

Corbin fans will have new winter sports teams to cheer for as boys and girls wrestling is being added as a varsity sport. The Corbin Board of Education approved the creation of a high school wrestling program during a special called meeting Friday. “We had the interest,” said Corbin Athletic Director Tackett Wilson noting that approximately 30 students, both boys and girls, turned out initially and the number has now grown to about 40. Kentucky high school wrestling has 14 weight classes in boys ranging from 106 pounds to 285 pounds. Girls’ wrestling has 12 weight classes from 100 pounds to 235 pounds. Wrestler’s family sues Cumberlands for wrongful death

The family of a University of the Cumberlands wrestler who died in September has filed wrongful death lawsuit against the university and individuals associated with the athletic department and UC Wrestling. The lawsuit filed Monday in Whitley Circuit Court names the university, the Cumberland Foundation, Inc., Cumberland Athletics Properties, Inc., University President Dr. Larry Cockrum, UC Athletic Director Christ Kraftick, now former UC Wrestling coaches Jordan Countryman and Jake Sinkovic, and other unnamed individuals as defendants in the lawsuit. Old Campbell Field lights donated to city

The lights that have been removed from Campbell Field will all find new life. At a special called meeting of the Corbin Board of Education, the board voted unanimously to donate four of the six poles to the City of Corbin, while moving the remaining two to the track at the high school. Superintended Dave Cox said Corbin City Manager approached him concerning the future of the poles and the possibility that they be donated to the city. Corbin’s Tackett Wilson named one of top football officials in Kentucky

Tackett Wilson, of Corbin, was one of three finalists for the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Outstanding Football Official Award. Wilson along with Burney Jenkins of Georgetown and Scott Moore of Union were named as the finalists. KHSAA officials noted that nominees are selected not only what he or she does on the field, but the contributions the individual makes to the community, along with their leadership efforts, training efforts and mentoring of newer officials. Finalists were named in each of the 10 sports in which the KHSAA licenses officials. KHSAA needs more game officials

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association is constantly seeking sports fans, former players, parents whose children have graduated, and other members of the community who want to be involved in the game and the community by suiting up as a sports official. Butch Cope, Associate Commissioner at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, said the KHSAA is now accepting applications for new officials in football, volleyball, soccer, cross country/track, boy’s and girls’ basketball, wrestling, swimming, field hockey, baseball, and softball. Corbin High School’s “Reelin’ Redhounds” are back on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina this morning for the second day of bass fishing in the 2021 High School Fishing World Finals and National Championship. In the world finals, Corbin’s team of Leighton Cornett and Dylan Prewitt lead the Redhounds entries, standing tied at 128th among the 398 entries. Two Corbin High School Bass Fishing duos at the state bass fishing tournament Josh Elliott and Jeffrey Casey finished 38th out of 88 teams, while John Brady White and Tyler Wine finished 55th.

Corbin Cheerleaders finish fifth at state

The Corbin High School Cheerleaders finished fifth at the state cheerleading competition. The Redhounds competed in the all-girls medium division, earning a score of 81.30. In 2021, Corbin finished fourth at nationals, and first in the region before competing at state.

The Corbin High School Cheerleaders finished fifth among the nine schools that competed Friday in the state cheerleading championship, all-girls medium division. Corbin finished the competition with a score of 81.30. Pulaski County took home the title with a score of 92.50.
