The Corbin High School Cheerleaders will take to the mat in the state competition at 3 p.m.
The squad, which is competing against Ryle, South Oldham, Pulaski County, Cooper, Russell, Butler, and Henry County in the All-Girls Medium Division, will be the fifth of nine groups to compete.
Corbin’s performance is scheduled to begin at 3:24 at George Rogers Clark High School.

In a season that almost wasn’t, the Corbin High School Cheerleaders have been on a big run, finishing fourth at the national cheerleading competition in Orlando, Florida and winning the region and qualifying to compete at the state cheerleading competition May 13 and 14.
In an interview in December, Coach Shonya O’Neill said it was a waiting game for her squad which was continuing to practice as it awaited word of if or when there would be a state or national competition in 2021.

Little princesses will have the opportunity to party with Corbin High School Cheerleaders during the team’s annual Princess Party on May 8 at Corbin Primary School.
“When the babies come in and see the princesses all in their costumes, Disney World magic comes to Corbin,” said Corbin High School Cheerleading Coach Shonya O’Neill. “Their eyes light up and they are mesmerized by them.”
The event this year will be a little different. Makeovers will not be included.
“We won’t be able to have the individual makeovers, but make no mistake, it will be just as magical as always,” said O’Neill.

Two members of Corbin High School’s Rollin’ Redhounds Bowling Team have advanced to the state tournament.
Kevin Allen from the boys’ team and Lauren Shackleford from the girls’ team each qualified for the state tournament by finishing as the region runner-up in their respective division
Shackleford rolled a three-game series of 567 to qualify third out of the eight girls.
After each competitor bowled two additional games, Shackleford’s 894 was good enough to keep her in the third spot as the competitors moved to the step bracket.
Under the rules of a step bracket, the two lowest seed play one game to determine who will advance to play the next lowest seed.

Whitley County’s wrestling season came to an end on Saturday at the Region 7 Wrestling Tournament at Madison Central High School in Richmond.
Coach Brandon Lawson took four wrestlers to the tournament, including Caleb Brown (126 pounds), Andrew Meadors (120 pounds), Anthony Colmus (138 pounds), and Brecken Hart (195 pounds).
Brown turned in the best performance, finishing sixth in his weight class.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualified to move on to the semi-state competition.
“We were very confident going into region. Unfortunately we didn’t have anyone place this year,” Lawson said. “We made small mistakes that came back to hurt us late in matches.”

Whitley County’s Lauren Matney wrapped up her high school wrestling career with a third place finish at the girls’ state wrestling tournament.
The senior competed in the 182 pound weight class, losing to eventual state champion Lisa Fleming-McBride of Harrison County by pinfall and then to Angel Hilton of Cooper by pinfall.
Corbin’s Rollin’ Redhounds and Lady Rollin’ Redhounds bowling teams competed in their inaugural team tournaments of the 2021 season Saturday.
The teams traveled to Galaxy Lanes in Richmond where they faced off against teams from Lexington Catholic, Fleming County, Madison Southern, Lincoln County and Wayne County.
The Lady Redhounds took first place with a total pin count of 2,498. Brooke Stewart rolled games of 162, 180 and 184, while Lauren Schackleford rolled a 164,212, and 146 to lead Corbin over Fleming County.
The Redhounds finish third behind Lexington Catholic and Fleming County. Kevin Allen led Corbin with games of 213, 170 and 213, while Sam Belew rolled a 156, 183 and 170....

Coach Brandon Lawson said the Colonels went two and two on the day.
Anthony Colmus, wrestling at 132 pounds, defeated the second ranked wrestler in the region, 6-3.
Brecken Hart scored a pinfall in his match at 220 pounds.
Lawson said Andrew Meadors competed at 126 pounds and Aaron Vanhook wrestled at 195 pounds.
Both lost by pinfall.
“They gave great effort during their matches and will be great wrestlers as they develop further,” Lawson said of Meadors and Vanhook.
The Colonels are scheduled to compete again on Saturday at Wayne County.
Corbin High School’s Rollin’ Redhounds Bowling Team kicked off its season Sunday in Danville.
Coach Pat Venable has eight girls and ten boys competing in 2021, who range from grades seven through 12.
Sunday’s event was the Eighth Region Singles Kick-Off at the Bowlarama.
Corbin’s Kevin Allen won the boys division.
Allen rolled games of 215, 208, 279, and 234 for a total score of 936 to take the lead going into the top eight bracket play.
Allen defeated Parker Price, 225 to 183, and then defeated Montana Jarman, 203 to 107 to win the tournament.
