Day one of the 2016 KHSAA tennis state championship tournaments for singles and doubles is in the books, and here are the results for our coverage area participants... Home stretch: Baseball teams make final preparations before district tournaments

With only days remaining before postseason play begins, area baseball teams are busy making final preparations on the field. Assuming weather does not force cancellations for the remainder of the week, all coaching staffs will have at least one more opportunity to see their teams in action before tournament play begins. The Corbin Redhounds started their week off with a 4-0 win over Middlesboro on Senior Night Monday. 12 local tennis players set to appear at state championships this weekend

The 2016 KHSAA state championship tennis tournaments for singles and doubles competitors will be held in Lexington this week, and 12 of our coverage area players will be involved. On Thursday, Whitley County’s Chris Tan will be in action at 8:00 a.m. at the University of Kentucky’s Boone/Downing tennis complex. Williamsburg’s Hannah Thomas and Whitley County’s Anna Grace Zehr will also play their first matches of the day at 8:00 a.m. at the Shillito Park tennis complex. Whitley County track and field athletes ready themselves for state after weekend region meet

The Whitley County High School track and field team traveled to Somerset Saturday, May 14, to take part in the 2016 Region 7 AAA meet at Pulaski County High School. The Colonels had two automatic qualifiers for next weekend’s KHSAA state championship meet – Tanner Bryant in boys pole vault, and the boys 4x800-meter relay team of Keaton Logan, Adam Petrey, Josh Richardson and Tyler Lawson. Once all AAA region meets have been completed, the Colonels may have more athletes qualify for next week’s state meet. Breaking Sports – Amanda Vermillion out as head coach of Lady Jackets basketball program

The News Journal has learned that Amanda Vermillion’s contract has not been renewed at Williamsburg Independent Schools for the 2016-17 academic year. This applies to both her position as an elementary school teacher, as well her position as the head coach of the Lady Jackets varsity basketball program. According to Vermillion, she was called to the front office during the day Thursday, at which time she was informed that the decision had been made by school administrators to not renew her contract. Corbin tennis dominates region competition, several area players now moving on to state

After winning boys and girls regional team titles in 2016, the Corbin tennis teams nearly swept the 13th Region singles and doubles tournaments as well. The tournaments, which kicked off at CHS last week, culminated Monday with four championship matches. It was Redhounds versus Redhounds in the finals of the boys doubles bracket, with Zane and Seth Maguet taking on Brady Keith and Nikhil Krishna. In the end, the team of Keith/Krishna would capture the championship trophy with a 7-5, 6-1 victory. 50th District softball standings set

After a 7-0 Williamsburg win over Whitley County Monday evening, the seeding for this year’s 50th District softball tournament is now set. Host South Laurel will be coming into this year’s tourney as the number one seed, having two wins over Williamsburg, Whitley County and Corbin for a perfect district record of 6-0. The Lady Hounds defeated both Whitley and Williamsburg twice this season to secure the number two seed in the upcoming tournament. Williamsburg has defeated Whitley County twice, making the Lady Jackets the number three seed, and the Lady Colonels were winless in regular season district play, making them them the number four seed. Senior Spotlight: Lynn Camp Tennis and Track

In the final Senior Spotlight for the 2015-16 school year, we meet five Lynn Camp High School athletes. From the school’s tennis team, we have Shelby Green, Faith Smith and Courtney Brown. From the track and field team, we have Green, Brady Farris and River Hellard. Green has the most experience of any player on the Lady Cats tennis team, having competed for nine years. Now that her final season is over, she is shifting her focus to the future. She says that she has made plans to study marketing and accounting at Union College. Smith has played tennis for six years. Local teacher continues chasing dreams as a bodybuilder

Last year, a story appeared in the News Journal about Nathan Smith, a local teacher who decided to compete in bodybuilding despite the fact that a medical condition forced him to begin living with a pacemaker in 2010. Smith recently placed second in the Classic Physique category at the 2016 Kentucky Derby Bodybuilding Championships in Louisville. That has qualified him to appear at the USA Bodybuilding Championships in Las Vegas in July. Should Smith place in the top two at the USA Championships, he will become an International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) professional competitor, which is the highest level that a bodybuilder can compete at. Whitley County runners sign with Cumberlands

The University of the Cumberlands added two talented athletes to its track and field program Friday morning when Whitley County Colonels Keaton Logan and Adam Petrey signed on to run as Patriots beginning next school year. Logan has been turning heads for the past couple of years with his distance running ability, both in track and cross country.
