Grace on the Hill United Methodist Church in Corbin has begun sign-ups for its children’s indoor soccer league. The league is open to children, ages four, five and six as of Oct. 1, 2021. More information or applications are available by going by the church office at 1632 Cumberland Falls Hwy. or going online to www.graceonthehill.org. The Corbin Redhounds Boys Soccer team’s season came to an end last Tuesday with a 4-1 loss at Paul Laurence Dunbar in the first round of the state tournament. The Redhounds finished the season with a record of 16-5, going 7-0 in the 13th Region and 6-0 in the 49th District. Jose Torres scored the goal for Corbin in Tuesday’s game with Gabe Cima picking up the assist. The Redhounds will be going into the 2022 season seeking to replace nine seniors. The Corbin Redhounds Soccer team posted its fourth consecutive shutout, capturing the 13th Region Championship Monday night with a 7-0 win over North Laurel. Corbin led North Laurel 3-0 at halftime Monday night and added two goals early in the second half to extend the lead to 5-0. Chesney Jacobs had three goals to lead the Redhound’s attack. The Corbin Redhounds Soccer team will play for the 13th Region title tonight at Union College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Redhounds defeated Barbourville Sunday night, 10-0 in the first round of the 13th Region Tournament Sunday night to advance to the title game. Corbin will face 49th District runner-up North Laurel in tonight’s championship game. Corbin defeated North Laurel on Wednesday for the district title, 5-0.

The Corbin Redhounds Boys’ Soccer team improved remained undefeated on the season following a 1-0 win Saturday against Madison Southern. Chesney Jacobs had the lone goal for the Redhounds. Jonathan Jackson had the shutout in goal for Corbin. The Redhounds were scheduled to play South Laurel Tuesday night in a game that had not yet been completed as of press time. The Redhounds were ahead 7-0 at halftime. Corbin will be back at home Saturday to face Lexington Catholic. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Corbin Redhounds have not missed a beat as they try to recapture the magic of the historic 2020 boys’ soccer season, winning the first two matches by a combined score of 11-4. Coach Armando Cima’s squad defeated Perry County Central, 8-2 last Tuesday, and then picked up a 3-2 win over Lexington Bryan Station in the FCPS Soccer Showcase on Saturday. Local high school soccer teams kicked off their seasons Tuesday night. In the final scrimmage before Tuesday’s opener at Berea, the Corbin Lady Redhounds hosted Garrard County.

Every day I am learning something new about high school sports in the area. When I planned for this week’s sports page to feature soccer previews, I planned on how to cover eight teams, the boys and girls’ teams from Corbin, Lynn Camp, Whitley County and Williamsburg. Then I learned that neither Lynn Camp nor Williamsburg have either soccer team. As two of the smaller schools in the area, it is understandable why not. Adding full-sized soccer teams, which require a minimum of 11 players, would impact the football programs on the boys’ side and the volleyball program on the girls’ side, not to mention the cross country teams. The Corbin Lady Redhounds Soccer team will be looking to take the next step in 2021, coming off a 7-6-1 season that ended with a loss to North laurel in the 13th Region Championship game. On the boys’ side, Corbin will be looking to follow up on an historic 2020 that saw the Redhounds go 13-2-1 while advancing to the state final four. “Things change from one season to the next,” said Coach Armando Cima. “We have, over time set a level of expectation.
