At its Board of Control meeting Thursday morning, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association discussed the possibility of adopting further changes to the 2020 fall sports season. In the end, however, the board voted to keep the current plan in place that would have athletes being able to officially begin practices on Monday, August 24.

Among those teams getting back together for the first time Monday was the Whitley County High School varsity boys soccer team. A large group of eager athletes showed up to the Whitley County soccer complex to hear...

With so many major championships won by coverage area teams over the past twelve months, the News Journal’s annual year-end list of top sports stories will require a total of ten spots for 2018.
1. Corbin boys basketball team wins region, advances to quarterfinals of Sweet 16 tournament
It was a tough call for which story should take the top spot this year, but in the end the Corbin Redhounds’ 13th Region championship and trip to the Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena was too big not to be placed at number one.
Led by senior Andrew Taylor, who finished his career as the Corbin High School basketball program’s all-time leading scorer, the...
The Whitley County Lady Colonels soccer team ended its 2018 season with a loss to North Laurel in the semifinal round of this year’s 49th District tournament. It was a heartbreaking result for a talented team that had aspirations of playing in a region tourney for the first time in the program’s history, but that result in no way diminishes the fact that this group has made a lot of history over the last 24 months or so.
Leading the way for the Lady Colonels this fall were five senior players – Jacqueline Oliphant, Jaine Stephens, Haley Hamblin, Haven Gilley and Lilly Rice. When these five came on the scene...
