As reported in the October 24 print edition of the News Journal, the Corbin Redhounds soccer team hosted Perry County Central Tuesday evening in round one of the 2018 KHSAA state championship tournament.
A goal by freshman Austin Wise off of a corner kick by senior Trey Cima with 8:31 remaining in the game put the Hounds up 1-0, and then a Cima penalty kick about five minutes later gave Corbin the eventual 2-0 victory.
With the win, the Hounds improve to 11-8-1 on the season and advance to the Elite 8 of this year's state championship tourney. In the quarterfinals they will face St. Xavier (23-2-1), who defeated South Oldham...

With World Cup mania running wild right now, I thought I’d take this opportunity to go ahead and talk a little bit about what we can expect in the upcoming 2018 varsity soccer season.
2017 was a big year for our four coverage area squads, with both Corbin teams advancing to the Elite Eight of the KHSAA state championship tourneys, the Whitley County girls ending the season with a second-best win-loss record in the region of 13-5 and the Whitley boys showing signs of continued improvement, nearly knocking off North Laurel in round one of the...
Three senior Corbin Redhound athletes signed on to play their respective sports at the collegiate level Tuesday morning.
Two football Hounds, Aaron Money and Eythan Sims, and one soccer Lady Hound, Abby Baker, signed their letters of intent in front of coaches, family members and classmates inside the gymnasium at CHS. Money, who signed with the University of Pikeville, and Sims, who signed with Lindsey Wilson College, helped lead the Corbin football team to a 13-2 season in 2017 including district and regional championships, and an appearance in the Class 3A state championship game at Kroger Field in Lexington.
Speaking about his two outgoing seniors, Redhounds head coach Justin Haddix said...
With the New Year just days away, this week we look back at the News Journal’s biggest sports stories of 2017.
1. The Corbin Redhounds’ run to the Class 3A state football championship: Undoubtedly, the biggest sports story of the year was Corbin football’s 13-2 season that included the program’s first appearance in a state championship game since 2002.
The football Hounds featured a talented cast of both seasoned veterans and young up-and-comers in 2017. The combination was enough to get the team over the hump, defeating Louisville Central in the state semifinals after losing to Belfry in week 14 of both the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
Corbin came up against a...

The Corbin girls were in Prestonsburg Tuesday, playing against the Region 15 champion Lady Blackcats. The Lady Hounds looked like the underdogs on paper, but in the end it was Sarah Fryer who scored two goals and lifted Corbin to a 2-1 victory. The win improves the team to 10-11-2 ahead of an Elite Eight matchup against Notre Dame (20-5-2) this Saturday in Lexington.
The Corbin boys were also on the road Tuesday, facing Region 15 champions Pikeville. Goals by Trey Cima and...
Last week the Corbin Redhounds and Lady Hounds soccer teams were disappointed after falling to South and North Laurel respectively in the championship games of this year's 49th District tournaments. The mood is a much different one now, however, as both teams were able to win 13th Region titles Thursday night in a pair of rematches from the 2017 district finals.
Both contests were held at Corbin Primary School Thursday, with the Lady Hounds versus the Lady Jaguars up first. Corbin was without star senior Abby Baker in the recent district tournament, but she was back for region, and she made all the difference in the championship game. She first scored...
As reported in the October 18, 2017 edition of the News Journal, the Corbin Lady Hounds volleyball team advanced to Tuesday night's 50th District championship game at Whitley County High School after defeating Williamsburg on Monday, 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-15).
The Lady Hounds faced South Laurel in the district finals after the Lady Cardinals defeated defending 13th Region champions Whitley County in their semifinal round game Monday, also in three straight sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-12).
Corbin got off to a great start against South Tuesday, winning the first two sets 25-19 and 25-19. The Lady Cards made a comeback, however, winning sets three and four (25-22, 25-14) to force a decisive...
The Corbin Lady Hounds soccer team was disappointed after a 5-0 loss to North Laurel in the finals of the 2017 49th District tournament this past Friday evening, but now they’re shifting their focus to next week’s 13th Region championship tournament at Corbin Primary School.
The Lady Hounds will be coming into the tournament as the two-time defending region champions, and they will hope to put together a three-peat performance that will lead to an appearance in the 2017 KHSAA state championship tournament later this month.
“We’re just going to try to shake this one off, and come back stronger and harder for the next game,” Corbin Head Coach Hannah Goins...
Friday was not a good night for either of the Corbin High School soccer teams, as both would fall in the championship games of the 2017 49th District tournaments at North Laurel High School in London.
The boys played first, taking on the South Laurel Cardinals. The game was scoreless until late in the first half, when junior Cardinal Gage Jackson scored a goal for his team at the 11:05 mark. Senior teammate Clay Weaver made it 2-0 in favor of South when he scored another goal soon after with 9:40 left in the half.
Weaver would score again with 29:15 left in the game, making it 3-0, which would end...
