After four games in London Monday evening, three of the News Journal’s four coverage area soccer teams were able to keep their 2017 season alive.
Whitley girls defeat OBI
It was Oneida Baptist Institute that handed the Whitley County girls soccer team a pair of crushing first-round losses in the 49th District Tournament the last two years.
The Lady Colonels weren’t having any of that this time around, burying OBI in an avalanche of scoring by strikers Reis Anderson and Madison Broyles to cruise to an 8-1 victory in the opening round of the girls’ tournament Monday night at South Laurel High School.

The 2017 boys and girls 49th District soccer tournaments kicked off Monday evening at North and South Laurel High Schools in London.
The Whitley County Lady Colonels squared off against Oneida Baptist Institute at South Laurel, winning 8-1 to improve to 13-4-1 on the year. Freshman Reis Anderson scored five goals in the win for the Colonels, who will now face the North Laurel Lady Jaguars in the district tournament semifinals. That game is scheduled to take place Tuesday at 8:00 PM at North Laurel High School.

This will be an extra-special year for the Whitley County soccer program, as they are celebrating their tenth anniversary in 2017.
Lady Colonels Head Coach Kelly Sawyers has been there from the beginning, saying, “Our first team was actually in middle school. In 2009 we started a junior varsity team at the high school level, and I remember clearly having to practice on the baseball field.”
“In 2010 we started our first varsity team, we were in the process of building our own complex and that’s when things really started to come together for us.”

The Corbin Redhounds and Lady Redhounds soccer teams are both just a few weeks away from kicking off the 2017 season, and hopes are high for both boys coach Armado Cima and girls coach Hannah Goins.
Both teams will be deep in experience this year, as large junior classes that saw plenty of playing time in 2016 will return to the field as seniors this fall.
Goins’ girls are also returning with significant success under their belts. The Lady Hounds are the two-time defending 13th Region champions, losing to 16th Region champions Russell in the first round of the 2016 state tournament.

As reported in the News Journal two weeks ago, local high school soccer players Neel Patel (Whitley County) and Trey Cima (Corbin) recently traveled to Holland as members of the Kentucky Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program.
In this follow-up report, Patel and Cima talk about their experiences overseas, as well as how they plan on using the knowledge they gained in Holland to help them on the pitch back home.

Sophomore Whitley County Colonel Neel Patel and sophomore Corbin Redhound Trey Cima are about to head overseas to represent their state and their country in Holland as members of Kentucky Youth Soccer’s Boys Olympic Development Team.
Patel and Cima will be departing the United States for Europe later this week, and are scheduled to return on Sunday, April 9.
While in Holland, Patel and Cima will train and compete alongside other players in the Olympic Development Program, and they will also have the exciting opportunity to pick up knowledge from members of the professional soccer club Feyenoord Rotterdam.

With a 4-0 victory over North Laurel Thursday night, the Corbin Lady Hounds soccer team became back-to-back 13th Region champions.
“This is awesome,” said Head Coach Hannah Going after the win. “Last year going to state was such an amazing opportunity, and to be able to go back-to-back is just awesome. I’m so proud of these girls, I’m so proud of the team. They’ve worked so hard, and they really deserve this.”
