Hopkins thinks baseball Jackets have great potential in 2017, excited for new season
The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets did not secure a district win during their 2016 campaign, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t highlights. The team got to travel to Florida at the beginning of the season, where they showed Head Coach Bryan Hopkins just how competitive they could be.
Once they returned home they went 4-2 with victories over 13th Region opponents Bell County, Barbourville, Lynn Camp and OBI, but that was followed by a 2-11 record between March 22 and April 26. It was a rough stretch, for sure, but the Jackets showed that they had a lot of...
High school baseball and softball teams all over Kentucky are officially starting team activities this week. With that in mind, we begin a series of previews taking a look at our local programs, starting now with the Lynn Camp Wildcats and Lady Cats.
The Wildcats baseball team was able to put double digits in the win column last season, recording 11 victories, including an 8-4 win over 51st District rivals Pineville. They were unable to make the 13th Region tournament, however, falling to Barbourville 6-4 in the first round of their district tourney.
Now, Head Coach Marc Estep is hoping that his team can continue to improve, winning even more games...
On Thursday, Angela Singleton (formerly Angela Steuer) was named as the newest head coach of the Whitley County Lady Colonels softball program.
Singleton, a seventh grade math teacher at Whitley County Middle School, served as an assistant on the Lady Colonels’ staff during the 2016 season. She is a graduate of the University of the Cumberlands, where she pitched and played right field for the Patriots from 2008-2012. She served one year as a graduate assistant at UC prior to beginning work in the Whitley County school system. She is originally from Miamisburg, OH where she played high school and travel ball.
“I’m very excited,” Singleton said of becoming a...
This past Friday and Saturday Lady Hounds softball Head Coach Dana White hosted her inaugural skills camp at Corbin High School. About 20 girls showed up for the camp, which was not quite the turnout that White was hoping for, but still, she said that she feels like the camp was an overall success.
“There were not as many girls as I hoped there would be, but it worked out because they ended up getting more one-on-one instruction,” White explained. “I think they really benefited from having more of that kind of interaction.”
Assisting White with the camp was two of her former high school teammates – Kayleigh Walts and Taylor...
The championship for the player fast pitch division of Lynn Camp’s summer softball league closed out the season on Friday, July 29.
The Mystery Cats and the Alley Cats faced off for the title with the Alley Cats coming away victorious, 17-13.
The Alley Cats took a big lead, 12-1, by the bottom of the second inning, but then the Mystery Cats began to fight back.
The game began with Alley Cat Madison Roberts getting a base hit on the first pitch, which lead to the first run. Roberts also pitched a complete game for the Alley Cats. Hailee Mills scored the first run for the Mystery Cats, also pitching six and...
Another spring sports season is in the books, and several baseball and softball players in Whitley County have given praise-worthy performances over the course of the last few months.

As of Tuesday night, there are no more coverage area baseball or softball teams left standing in 2016 as both the Corbin Redhounds and the Williamsburg Lady Jackets fell to North Laurel in the semifinal round of this year's 13th Region baseball and softball tournaments.
Corbin got into a hole early against the Jaguars, and by the fourth inning North had built up a commanding 10-0 lead. Things were looking bleak for the Hounds at this point, but they continued to fight, putting a couple of runs up on the board to prevent the shutout loss. It was too little, too late though, as the Jags would eventually go on...
With a 16-10 win over Knox Central Wednesday night, the host Lynn Camp Lady Cats became the first team in the history of the program to win a 51st District championship title.
Knox got out to an 8-0 lead after two innings, but the Lady Cats were able to go ahead thanks to a nine-run explosion in the top of the third. They never looked back from there, adding two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and one more in the seventh inning. The Lady Panthers would put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth before going on to...

After a 7-0 Williamsburg win over Whitley County Monday evening, the seeding for this year’s 50th District softball tournament is now set.
Host South Laurel will be coming into this year’s tourney as the number one seed, having two wins over Williamsburg, Whitley County and Corbin for a perfect district record of 6-0.
The Lady Hounds defeated both Whitley and Williamsburg twice this season to secure the number two seed in the upcoming tournament.
Williamsburg has defeated Whitley County twice, making the Lady Jackets the number three seed, and the Lady Colonels were winless in regular season district play, making them them the number four seed.
It should be an interesting tournament two...
