Colonels, Lady Colonels eager to play in newly renovated stadiums in 2025

With extensive field renovations taking place at Whitley County High School, the baseball and softball Colonels are both eager to get back to action on newly installed turf playing surfaces. Things aren’t quite ready yet, but with some good luck when it comes to the weather (badly needed), games should be able to take place at WCHS later this spring. While coaches Jeremy Shope and Angela Singleton wait for the remodel job to finish up, they are keeping their teams busy with indoor workouts and, when able, the use of middle school facilities and the high school’s turf football field. The situation is less-than-ideal, but both squads are making the...

Corbin High School celebrates opening of new athletic commons area Monday

Earlier this week, the brand new athletic commons area at Corbin High School was officially unveiled to the community. For many current Redhounds and Lady Hounds, it was a chance to check out the facility that they will call home for the duration of their high school athletic careers. “It’s going to be great,” said tennis Coach Chris Jones. “The courts have been resurfaced, there are separate locker rooms for the boys and the girls, they have added bleachers, and then, of course, there is the tower.” The tower that Jones is referring to is a large structure located at the center of the commons area that provides coaches and officials...

KHSAA announces rules changes for coming school year

On Monday, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) announced some rules changes via its social media accounts and on the khsaa.org website. One rule change dealt with high school baseball, and read: Players using non-wood bats will have greater flexibility in using substances to enhance their grip on the bat with a change that brings consistency to Rule 1-3-2. This rule revision was one of two proposed by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Baseball Rules Committee after its annual rules meeting held June 2-4 at The Alexander hotel in Indianapolis. The rules changes were accepted by the NFHS Board of Directors and are effective with the...

Shope announces her return for one more season as a softball Patriot

Sports fans in Whitley County have gotten to know the name of Lindsey Shope very well since she first arrived at Whitley County High School in 2018. As a sophomore and junior, she helped guide the Lady Colonels to new heights on the softball field, including a 50th District championship title in 2019. Unfortunately, Shope and her fellow Class of 2020 spring student-athletes were robbed of their senior seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but where one door closes another opens. Starting in 2021, Shope took her talents across town and began living out her dream as a college athlete at the University of the Cumberlands. As a Patriot softballer, she...

Tuesday Night Highlights: 50th District baseball and softball

The Corbin Redhounds successfully defended their 50th District championship crown Tuesday evening, while the Corbin Lady Hounds played their way into Wednesday's softball district finals. After wins over Williamsburg and South Laurel, respectively, the Whitley County Colonels and the Corbin Redhounds met up on the baseball diamond at Briar Creek Park to determine this year's 50th District champion Tuesday evening. The Colonels managed to get out to an early lead, but some big at-bats midway through the contest allowed the Hounds to take control. They would not look back, going on to secure a 6-2 victory that improved them to a region-best 27-10 overall win-loss record on the season. With...

Lady Colonels looking to begin upward trend this spring

Since their 50th District championship season in 2019, the Whitley County Lady Colonels softball team has not been able to compete at the level that they would like. This year, they are looking to change that. “We have been on a downward trend since 2019,” Head Coach Angela Singleton admitted recently. “But I think that the girls have reached a point where their mentality is that they really need to be team first. They want to win ball games, and I think that they will do whatever it takes to make that happen.” The Lady Colonels are off to a good start, winning their season opener Monday, 12-2, at McCreary Central. “We’re...

WHS softball team hungry for more wins in 2024

After a winless season in 2019 and the cancellation of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Williamsburg Lady Jackets softball team has struggled with their efforts to rebuild the program into a district contender. Having recorded just 14 wins in their previous three campaigns, Head Coach Andrea Winchester said that this year’s group features the personnel, and the desire, to finally begin turning things around. “This season our goals are to at least double our win record from last year (six games), and to be able to capitalize on those games that we should’ve won,” Winchester said. “I believe that we have a good team coming back this...

Lady Hounds aiming to reclaim regional championship in 2024

Despite a very respectable 23-8 record and a 50th District championship win, the Corbin Lady Hounds softball team were not entirely satisfied with their 2023 campaign. They accomplished a lot, yes, but they fell short of their ultimate goal of successfully defending their 2022 13th Region championship crown. This season, the team looks to rectify that situation. “We are feeling pretty good about this season,” said Corbin High School Softball Head Coach Crystal Stidham. “We have a lot of talent on the team, and a lot of girls who are good utility players. They are very versatile.” The Lady Hounds will be returning the majority of their starters to the lineup this...

Work progressing on new turf fields for CHS baseball and softball teams

The recent updates to Corbin High School’s football stadium has grabbed many headlines in recent months, but the school’s baseball and softball facilities are also undergoing major renovations, including all-new turf playing surfaces that will be in place for the upcoming 2024 season. “There’s going to be turf, there will be new fencing all the way around, and we’re moving to the third base side where the locker room will be completely re-done,” said CHS baseball Head Coach Cody Philpot of some of the more important changes taking place in that area of the campus. Philpot also mentioned that seating in the ballpark is being updated, which should improve the overall...
