The Corbin Lady Redhounds Softball team has put the three-game losing streak at Boyd County in the rearview mirror, extending the current winning streak to four games. Corbin came back twice Friday night against George Rogers Clark for a 6-5 victory. Kaylee Morales went two for three with three RBI’s to lead the Lady Redhounds, who scored three runs in the first inning to erase a 2-0 GRC lead. GRC extended the lead to 5-3 after three innings, but the Lady Redhounds came back with one run in the third and two more in the fourth to retake the lead. Whitley County rebounded from a 21-5 loss to South Laurel last Tuesday to pick up consecutive road wins against Barbourville and Williamsburg. The Lady Colonels defeated the Lady Tigers Thursday night, 15-0 in three innings. Jaycie Monhollen and Amber Brown each had three RBI’s for the Lady Colonels. Makenzie Lunsford gave up two hits in three innings on the mound for Whitley County. Whitley County defeated Williamsburg Friday night, 11-6. Monhollen had three hits in five at bats in the win. The Corbin Lady Redhounds came back from a 6-run deficit against Whitley County, but lost 9-6 at home Friday night, running its losing streak to three games. Kaila Stidham went three for four with a stolen base for Corbin. Rebecca Stewart and Kallie Housley each added two hits. Corbin was scheduled to play Williamsburg Tuesday night in a game that was not completed as of press time. The Corbin Lady Redhounds will be looking to rebound from a 1-4 start to the season when they host Whitley County Friday night. Corbin opened the season last Monday with a 13-0 loss to Rockcastle County and a 5-2 loss at North Laurel on Tuesday. The Lady Redhounds picked up their first win in the opening of the Jerry Puckett Cardinals Showcase at George Rogers Clark, defeating Pike County Central, 13-2 in five innings on Friday. If you look up the definition of a rebuilding year in the dictionary, then you might very well find a picture of the 2019 Williamsburg High School Girls’ Softball Team. The squad lost six seniors, who comprised the entire infield, after the 2018 campaign, and went winless in 2019 ending the season with a first-round loss in the 50th District Tournament to Whitley County in four innings. Lady Cat Makenzie Grant signs with Alice Lloyd for softball

Thursday afternoon, inside the Lynn Camp High School gymnasium that is now named after her former basketball coach, Richard “Birddog” Jones, Lady Cat Makenzie Grant signed to continue her athletic career at the collegiate level. Grant signed with the Alice Lloyd Eagles Thursday, but to play softball, not basketball. “I feel very blessed, and proud of myself,” she said of the opportunity. “I’ve always dreamed about what it would be like to get to go to the next level.” Although Grant at one time considered specializing in only basketball, she said that she is now very glad about her decision to also compete on the softball field. Little League All-Stars: Softball teams eliminated, baseball tourneys set to get underway

From the July 3, 2019 edition of the News Journal... 9-10 Corbin Softball Last Tuesday, June 25, the 9-10 year-old Corbin softball All-Stars were facing elimination when they took the field against Jackson County. A final score was not available by press time, but unfortunately, the Corbin girls were sent home after a 19-4 loss. The 9-10 softball All-Stars fell into the loser’s bracket of their tournament, held in Williamsburg, after being shutout by the Tri-City All-Stars in round one. In recent years we have recognized the best high school baseball and softball players in the county in a variety of different ways. We’ve had All-County Most Valuable Players and MVP runners-up. We’ve had individual team MVPs and Honorable Mentions. We’ve even had some winners in special superlative categories, but this year we’re changing it up again with a pair of top ten lists. With so many talented players in the county this year, however, it was incredibly difficult to whittle the list down to just ten in both sports.
