Corbin tennis dominates region competition, several area players now moving on to state

After winning boys and girls regional team titles in 2016, the Corbin tennis teams nearly swept the 13th Region singles and doubles tournaments as well. The tournaments, which kicked off at CHS last week, culminated Monday with four championship matches. It was Redhounds versus Redhounds in the finals of the boys doubles bracket, with Zane and Seth Maguet taking on Brady Keith and Nikhil Krishna. In the final Senior Spotlight for the 2015-16 school year, we meet five Lynn Camp High School athletes. From the school’s tennis team, we have Shelby Green, Faith Smith and Courtney Brown. From the track and field team, we have Green, Brady Farris and River Hellard. Green has the most experience of any player on the Lady Cats tennis team, having competed for nine years. It’s good to be the champs… The Corbin tennis program has built a strong tradition of winning over the past several years, and this past week they added to that rich history with a pair of 13th Region team championships. Team competition saw a new format beginning in 2016, with all schools fitting into brackets via a blind draw that took place before the season began. Each match of the tournament featured three singles and two doubles matchups, with the first team to pick up three victories moving on. In the first of two Senior Spotlight features this week, we meet the four young ladies leading the Corbin High School tennis program in 2016 – Jaclyn Jewell, Emma McGraw, Cassidy Green and Kaitlyn Brewer. Jewell recently signed her letter of intent to continue playing in college as a member of the University of the Cumberlands Patriots tennis team. Redhound tennis: Dixon hopes to continue winning tradition in 2016 season

Each spring the Corbin tennis teams take the court again with the expectation of conquering the region and returning to compete at the KHSAA state championships. This year is no different, and Head Coach Nickie Dixon says that she is feeling good about what she’s seen out of her tennis Hounds so far in 2016. Tennis Colonels seeking return trip to state in 2016

In 2015, the Whitley County Colonel tennis program sent three players to compete in the KHSAA state championships in Lexington. Freshman Chris Tan qualified to play in the boys’ singles tournament, and freshman Anna Grace Zehr teamed with senior Haley Mahan in the girls’ doubles tournament. In 2016, second-year Head Coach David Halcomb is hoping that the Colonels can return to state, only this time with a longer list of athletes. “We’re really excited about it,” Halcomb said recently when asked about beginning the new season. “I feel good about the program.
