In observance of Fire Prevention Week Oct. 6-12, the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction’s Division of Fire Prevention, together with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), reminds Kentuckians to develop an emergency fire safety plan. According to the NFPA, in 2017 U.S. fire departments responded to 357,000 home structure fires. Over 2,600 deaths and 10,600 injuries resulted from those fires. The Whitley County Historical and Genealogical Society held its annual Heritage Day celebration Oct. 5 in Williamsburg. The event featured various craft exhibitions, and tours of the historical and genealogical society's museum, which is located in the old downtown train depot.

The Second Annual River Fog Festival made a successful return to Williamsburg Saturday evening drawing big crowds to hear Larah Helayne, Joslyn & The Sweet Compression, and Jordan Allen and The Bellwethers. The event also featured three craft beer breweries, three food vendors, and various games and activities for children.

University of the Cumberlands is hosting its annual food drive Oct. 15 – Nov. 15. As always, all food collected will be donated to local food banks. In the past three years, Cumberlands has collected more than 61,000 pounds of food to help families in the community be fed during the holiday season. The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is driving home a safety message to motorists aimed at preventing crashes by encouraging two life-saving actions behind the wheel- buckling up and putting down the phone. Launching today, the state’s first Buckle Up Phone Down campaign features videos, radio spots, digital advertising and a new dedicated website, kyhighwaysafety.com, to promote the initiative. “The campaign offers compelling stories from credible sources urging drivers to buckle up and put the phone down,” said KOHS Acting Director Jason Siwula. “We believe that if all drivers practice these two, simple behaviors, we will see a dramatic reduction in fatalities and injuries on our roadways.” According to KOHS, each...

A Red Flag Warning, which was issued on Sept. 16 banning all outdoor burning in Whitley County, has been lifted. However, this doesn’t mean that you can burn any time that you want. Whitley County Judge-Executive Pat White Jr. issued an executive order effective at 9 a.m. Monday lifting the burning back following recent rains. A Red Flag Warning means warm temperatures, very low humidity and stronger winds are expected to combine to produce an increased risk of fire danger, according to the National Weather Service. The Corbin Board of Education has taken an option to purchase a piece of property adjoining the renovated Corbin Elementary School on Kentucky Ave. At a special called meeting on September 12, the board approved the option to purchase the property adjacent to the front parking lot near where the green house was located. Superintendent Dave Cox told the board that before the purchase could move forward, the Kentucky Department of Education would have to give its approval. “I have sent a letter seeking KDE permission to purchase the property, but they did give permission to do an option so that’s what we did while awaiting approval to purchase,” Cox said.
