A report about a stolen gun early Saturday morning led authorities to the discovery of methamphetamine at a Williamsburg motel Sunday morning. About 3 a.m. Saturday, Whitley County Sheriff’s K-9 Deputy Brian Hensley responded to a report of a stolen handgun at a south US25W residence. The homeowner told police that he allowed a woman into his home because she claimed to have been beaten by her boyfriend and was seeking a place to spend the night, according to a sheriff’s department release. Corbin schools approves agreement reducing number of Knox students allowed tuition-free

The number of students that live in the Knox County School District who can instead attend Corbin without paying tuition is being slightly reduced. The change was approved last Thursday during the regular monthly meeting of the Corbin Independent Board of Education. Following an executive session to discuss pending or potential litigation, board members emerged and voted unanimously to approve a one-year non-resident student agreement with Knox Schools for the 2017-18 school year with a threshold of 387 students. Whitley Co. schools forced to turn down tablet computer grant

The Whitley County school district has over $1 million worth of computer devices that need to be replaced, but is being forced to turn down an offer of 90 new tablet computers for students. Whitley County Superintendent Scott Paul and Chief Information Officer Kevin Anderson informed the board of education during its regular monthly meeting Thursday that the district is turning down the grant funding because of problems with Internet access for the devices. The South East/South Central Educational Coop Qualcomm Grant would have provided funding for 120 tablet computers with Android-based operating systems. W’burg sewer bills expected to rise steadily

Williamsburg residents will soon be paying more on their sewer bills and will likely be seeing steady increases for the next several years in order to pay for necessary repairs and improvements to the city’s wastewater treatment system. Earlier this month, the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority (KIA) approved 11 loan applications, including a $2,456,489 loan application from the city of Williamsburg. The loan is designated for improving existing infrastructure, replacing sewer lines with large PVC, man holes, and a pump station. The city is under an agreed order with the Kentucky Division of Enforcement in the state Environmental and Energy Cabinet, which was issued in 2010 due to sanitary sewer overflows. “We are borrowing...

The community event season in downtown Corbin is scheduled to begin on March 21. Corbin Downtown Director Andy Salmons said the first event, Art Hub Tuesdays, is one of two additions to the downtown events calendar. The event, organized by the Arts and Literary League, is an effort expand the arts community in the area and to serve as planning sessions for the Downtown Gallery Hops to be held in conjunction with the Moonbow Nights events in May and September “We want it to be an art movement, not just an art group,” said Debra Kersey, one of the group organizers. The Corbin Public Library is hosting its annual “Fancy Nancy Tea Party” Saturday. The event will feature story time with special guest children’s author, Tonya Moreland. Circulation Clerk Cassandra Estep said Moreland has written two books, “When Am I Beautiful, and “Who Will I Marry?” Estep said the event will also feature a photo booth and a chance to meet “Elsa” from Disney’s “Frozen.” “We will also have a nail and hair salon area where girls can get their nails painted and a new hairdo,” Estep said. Corbin and London Rotary International Clubs are once again joining together to help in the organization’s fight to eradicate polio. For the ninth consecutive year, the clubs will co-host the Rotary International Dinner on Feb. 11 at the Community Center in London. The world famous Harlem Globetrotters are returning to The Arena in Corbin on Jan. 23 and 18-year veteran Globetrotter Herbert “Flight Time” Lang will be among them. Shelter needs your help to save animals

As much as the workers and volunteers at the Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter would like to save the lives of all the 17 cats or dogs that are taken to the shelter on average each day, they can't. The save rate for dogs varied monthly from 35 - 83 percent in 2015 while the save rate for cats varied per month from 12 - 61 percent in 2015. Corbin man dies in crash in Madison County

A Corbin man died Saturday in a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 75 in Madison County. Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison pronounced 36-year-old Robert Salyers dead at the scene of the crash on north-bound I-75 near the 82-mile marker. According to Madison County Sheriff’s deputies, Salyers’ 2007 Dodge pickup ran off the road and into a wooded area where it collided with several trees. Cornelison reported that Salyers was wearing a seat belt and did not appear to have sustained injuries that were severe enough to caused death.
